I recently bought a new car (07 Rabbit) and I want to know the doos and donts while in the break in period. I currently have 1700km on it and I was told that the break in was like 1000km but I think its not alot. I was also curious if my gas mileage will be better after the break in point.

The straight forward answer to this question is 1500km is the breakin period. Until this period, the car should be driven at a relatively medium speed, up to 80km/hr max. and also do not rev too high (not over 3000RPM)before gear change (in the case of manula drives). This will ensure that your engine parts take correct shape gradually.I know the oil consumption level becomes better with properly run-in engine.Cheers!

Engines are built much better these days (closer tolerances), break-in isn't quite so cruicial as it used to be. If the manual says 1000km, than you're "broken-in".

I would, though, pay attention to the brakes during that period.

Break in takes about 15,000 miles. Try not to push the car to extremes during the break in period. Once you get close to 15000 miles you do begin to see increased fuel efficency and better response. :) Happy Drivings.
