I will be in Long Beach by way of LAX in about a month. Would it be wiser if I reserved a shuttle to the hotel now, or would it cost less if I wait until we are actually there to get one?

I work at LAX. NO need to reserve a ride. Transportation is easy from the airport. Every terminal outside of the baggage claim area you will see several "colored" signs. The Orange sign is the shuttles. Supershuttle and Primetime Shuttle. The dispatchers are there. Just go see them and they will get you on a shuttle to where ever you want to go. If you want to take the Metrorail (train/subway), go to the Blue sign and get on the "G" shuttle. That shuttle is free and it will take you to catch the Green Line. You take the green line east and transfer to the Blue Line south to Long Beach. Cost is about $5.00 for an all day pass. Every terminal has a Travelers Aid Booth close to the baggage claim area. You can always ask them.

well you dont have to reserve the shuttle, when you arrive
after claiming your luggage go to the center island and
speak to either the Prime time or Super shuttle dispatcher
who will arrange/call a van for you
if you want to save some money (depending how much luggage
you have
you could take transit there,
you do that by take a LAX G shuttle to the Aviation station
boarding a Green Line taking that to Blue Line and then
taking the Blue Line to Long Beach
or you could take the Lax LOT C bus to the City Bus terminal
then board a Metro 232 for direct service to Long Beach
another suggestion see if your airline services Long Beach
airport instead of Lax.
some of major (American, Alaska, America west/US air ,
Jet blue do service Long beach airport
