Alzheimer's Disease or another form of dementia can start at any age, although of course we tend to think of it as a disease of the very elderly. He may have some form of dementia or he may be having some tiny strokes (TIA) but in any case he needs a doctor's advice. Please coax him into seeing a doctor. He's probably frightened of what they may find but he needs help.

Don't worry yet but he should definitively go to a doctor. Memory lapses and other weird stuff is normal once you become a senior citizen. The first memory to go with Alzheimer's is usually emotional memory. It is the memory of knowing how you felt at a moment in the past. The best way to test that is to look at a picture and be able to remember how you felt. It is the memory that brings tears when you see certain pictures. In the early stages of Alzheimer's patients are usually still able to see a picture and remember the events but not the emotions.

He should definitely see a doctor.

If he won't go into the office, can a doctor come to see him? Perhaps if you have a family friend who is a doctor, or a friendly family physician who can understand the situation. They will be able to help diagnose him properly and also know how to approach him about taking medication, or will have connections with some one who can.

Best of luck.

It could be depression or maybe Parkinson's disease. My father in law had parkinson's and an array of other illnesses but the parkinson's made him stutter and made him confused. He needs a thorough check up with his doctor. See if you can take him for an appointment. I'm sorry you are going through this. I have been through it too.

It does sound like Alzheimer's disease. My mother has it, it is sad but not enough is known about it. Not much can be done. Be supportive and when he asks the same question over and over just answer it like it was the first time it was asked. It can be frustrating for both of you if you let it get to you.
