Thanks for all of your answers......boy, that was an awkward dinner! The gf's dad said right away to the waitress that they would pay for themselves and their daughter! Very strange (he was)!!!!! So we didn't offer to pay the whole bill. But thanks to you all for answering!

Your son... although the girls parents would likely offer to pay their share. If your son is young and doesn't have the funds, he should do an adequate amount of work for you. Let him pay at the restaurant... Not only will you feel proud of him, the girls parents will be VERY impressed. (In the case of him being young.)

Since the invitation was yours - through your son - you should offer to pay.

If your son and his girlfriend are both of adult age, it is appropriate for the one of them that did the asking to pay for the meal. If they are teenagers, and don't have the money to do this, it is acceptable for the parents to split the bill.

Since your side is initiating the meeting, you should pay (although technically your son should pay).

It depends on the age of your son. If he is an adult, he should pay for everyone, as it is his invitation. If he is a child, you and your husband should pay for everyone, as it is your invitation.

you need to pay for all. And should they become engaged, it is the grooms parents who initiate another dinner with the brides parents to celebrate the occasion.
