This is a stupid question but I'm having a hell of a time popping my ammo cans open with the opener that came with them. It's not the type that uses a key, just the opener. Can anyone help me out before I have to bust out the tools? Thanks in advance!

Commie surplus ammo in the big ham can? Those cans are tougher than the opener tool!

I got an old big flat blade screwdriver and make a flat chisel point with my dremel tool, or a grinder or file will work.

Gently hammer the screwdriver along one edge into the can, not too deep, then turn the blade almost parrallel and tap all around the can just inside the lip. You only go about 1/8 inch each time. Be patient and don't damage the boxes inside and don't go deep in the can on the improbable chance you hit a primer.

You really only need to cut about halfway around, then peel the metal back and unload the ammo boxes or packs.

Happy shooting!

They didnt give you the "can opener"? That was dirty! Surplus ammo like that with "russian gibberish", also called cyrillic, can be a great value. And usually it comes with the opening tool. But a larger can opener will work. Now, also be aware that this ammo is very corrosive! You need to clean immediatly with something like Hoppes' #9 solvent. Or someother agent that negates the effect of the corroding salts in the ammo. If you wonder where the "black bore" comes from in alot of surplus guns that shoot his comes from, thats it. So shoot well and safely, and clean your rifle IMMEDIATLY after shooting. You can also use windex with amonia, and make sure its spedically amonia, to spritz in the barrel and halt the reaction until you can get the rifle somewhere to clean it.

what does the opener look like?

the 1200+ can of 7.62 X 39 I bought was in a soldered can...
no opener. I used a broken M1 bayonet to peel it open:
messy but effective.
