If you work in an office with a computer, you will probably continue to have problems. Migraine management, if you don't have or are unable to take a triptan medication (like Imitrex) is a matter of quiet dark and rest.
Headaches are complex problems and there is no easy solution.
It is best to find out the source/cause of your recurrent or chronic headaches.
First, if this is the worst headache of your life or could be considered a thunderclap headache, or if you have a headache and neck rigidity (not stiffness) and or back pain, seek urgent medical care.
Otherwise, first try the simple solutions first paracetamol/acetaminophen/Tylenol or aspirin (I prefer Excedrin personally) go to a darkened quiet room and lie down. Avoid bright lights and prolonged computer use.
If you are having recurrent or chronic headaches you need to talk to your health care provider. They can pick the proper abortive medication for the acute headache and possibly prescribe a preventive medication if your headaches are too frequent.
Since you are going to see a doctor, go to the following site prior to your visit:
www.headaches.org
In the consumer area, see the educational resources tab.
Print and fill out the headache diary as shown.
See the How to talk to your headache doctor page.
I also recommend the pages on analgesic rebound, and diet.
Do not take Imitrex or any one else’s migraine medication without a health care provider’s approval.
I have seen patients with severe hypertensive crisis bordering stroke and cardiac problems due to taking a medication which was inappropriate for them. Also there are some types of migraine which are not recommended for the new migraine wonder drugs, ie. Hemiplegic and basilar artery migraines.
There are many non medication methods which are beneficial also, such as biofeedback, and acupuncture. Ask your GP to refer you for these.
Seek the assistance of your primary care clinic and if no improvement a specialist in headaches.
As a fellow migraine sufferer, I wish you the best.
Wish I could download you a work excuse!!!

I suffer from migraines myself. There's is several things you can try. 1) Take 2 painkillers every 4-6 hours. 2) Try laying down in a dark room 3) Stay away from bright lights & noise until the pain subsides. 4) Apply a cold compress to your head. 5) Try and sleep. Migraines usually last 1-3 days. You can also try wearing dark sunglasses during the day. Also drink plenty of fluids. It's probably a good idea if you went to your doctor as this is your first migraine. I hope your feeling better soon.

Excedrine Migraine, Advil Migraine, etc., usually help at the onset of a migraine, but after a migraine is at full tilt, especially after 2 days, try over the counter Orudis KT (ketoprofen), it's usually recommended for arthritis...it's the only one that worked for my husband when he had to wait for his prescription, his migraines were so severe and would last 4-5 days...since he stopped eating anything with high fructose corn syrup, (unbelievable, it's in almost everything) his migraines are gone, hasn't had one in 4 months...no more prescriptions.
Hope the Orudis KT works for you.

Try putting an ice pack on your temples. Also, lay down with a fan blowing over your face. If you have long hair, wet it and as it cools it should help. Basically, dark, cool rooms is what you need. You could try wearing sunglasses while working. Good luck
PS- this comes from a long time migraine sufferer.

There is no medicine for H/A OR MIGRAINE. Not only these but for almost all painful diseases. Hence they become chronic.
Acidity, excessive wind, cold , heat, sour food and sinusitis, constipation, intestinal inflammation;
Blockage in the flow of Vital Energy are their causes. None of them can be treated with medicine. Our 100% success in treating migraine &H/A confirms it.
Avoid comp for some days if possible and observe if migraine disappears.
If it fails - Acupuncture is the best treatment.
I can treat it with naturopathy and YOG, but how can you manage pl see.
Avoid late sleeping if possible;spicy, sour, stale bakery foods and alcohole.
Sweet foods, COCOANUT WATER,sweet fruits, milk, rice, SPROUTS, SALADS and good sleep will help you.
But you try one herbal remedy- two drops of drumstick leaves' juice in opposite nostril if one side pains and both nostrils if full H/A will give you rescue. Betel leaf helps but it isvery strong.
If it is acute pl search a painful point 3-6 mm behind your thumb nail and press it, H/A will disappear within 30 seconds.

When I have a migraine I turn of all lights and anything that makes noise and put one of those microwave beanbag type heating pads across my face. I take like 3 or 4 advils and sometimes have a little coffee or coke because caffeine seems to help.

I was going to suggest Excedrin Migraine, that's the only OTC med. that ever works for me-you probably need to call your doc. and see if they could call you in a scrip.
