This morning a man walked by and his forearm bumped the driver's rearview mirror. At first we thought he broke it. We got his personal information in case we need to get in touch with him again.

But a small bump is probably not going to loosen/break (it's kind of barely hanging on) the rearview mirror.

Either a.) it was broken when we got the car but nobody noticed.

or b.) somebody hit the mirror while it was parked.

Should I be honest and tell the rental agency about it? Or hope they won't notice?

I feel stuck because if I say something, I could get charged. Even if it was already broken when we took it, how can we prove that?

What should I do?

If you don't say anything and they inspect and notice, they will bill you. I'd tell them when I returned the car something like "I didn't notice until we had left the lot with it, but the rear view mirror is broken on the car we just returned" and see where they go with it. If they claim you must have done it, you can say quite truthfully "If I did, would I point it out to you?" and hopefully they will then check the record to see who had it before you and go bother them instead.

I would contact the rental company and let them know. If you tell them up front, explain that the man simply bumped it, they'll probably understand and go with the fact that it was broken before you took it. If they do still want to charge you, have them contact the man who did it, and speak with him first.

If you wait and hope they don't notice, and then they do end up noticing they'll probably assume you did it and were trying to hide it, and they they'll probably make you pay for it.

Either way, they'll proabably want you to bring the car back, so they can give you a different one, and take that one to be repaired.

Hope this helps. :-)

easy fix.... buy a pack of plastic weld (at the local hardware), it is two tubes of liquid when combined will hold for life. Follow the instructions and just stick back the mirror. it will hold and you don't have to worry about the agency charging you for repairs

If you did not buy their insurance coverage, you are responsible for the repair.

You can give them the man's name if that helps. They may assume that it was loose at time of rental. Maybe not.

They will notice.

Claim that you came out of a restaurant or something and it was like that.

Better to tell them than to have them find out.

They have insurance (and you are paying for it) so they can get it fixed.
