Do you like to mock people because of their conditions?

Do you laugh at cancer patients? Invite people in wheelchairs to play soccer? Make generalizations about people based on their skin color?

Why is it OK to mock people with developmental disabilities? Join me in educating the WSIDR about people first language. Just cut and paste this link as your answer to his questions. Or google "people first" or "person centered planning" for yourself. I enjoy his questions - but not at the expense of others. Being Mentally retarded does not cancel out an individuals humanity.

I'm for persuading WSIDR to alter his approach. But if it is done in a confrontational or just a cut and paste manner, all he has to do is block the "people first" posters.

I wonder what other ways this could be accomplished. Is there another "R" word that could be substituted?

Plus, not everyone is as aware how much of a slur retard is. I use it myself, I hate to admit. And you do have to win the community here. So I wonder if your approach would cause some to dismiss you, only emboldening WSIDR's resolve to stay as is?

Vicarious, I see your point. Interestingly enough, I work with a disabled individual (no hands/shortened arms; one leg) and this guy is probably the first to make jokes about giving him a hand and things like that. I even get uncomfortable when he mocks himself! When it comes down to it, disrespecting someone because of their inability to be part of the "norm" is wrong at so many levels . . . Good question, friend.

Well to your advertisement no I do not mock people because of their conditions. My brother has a terminal stomach cancer and my son has autism. Im not sure some little thing is going to make most judgmental jerks see the error of their ways.

I agree with you about wsidr. There's a shock jock, mancow mullins who does the same thing. I think they are both sick puppies.
