New York City traffic is fine during most of the day...you can get around Queens, Brooklyn, the Bronx, and Staten Island with no problem. I do it all the time; we locals know the shortcuts! Manhattan is just consistently packed, and why is that? Because people love this place. But have no fear, we locals know how to get around...
Our clean, efficient subways!
We're a mass-transit and walking town. Can't beat our subway-and-bus system. Keeps the air clean (less pollution than certain big-time driving cities, eh?), saves on gas, gets us anywhere we need to go, beats the traffic...keeps us in shape, too! Love 'em!
Not sure I'd take pride in having the most people on the continent, even if we had that...look at Mexico City's pollution. Population all depends on how far a city draws its boundaries, anyway. The key stat is density. If you can move the people that you have, then you're doing OK.
For the buildings, beauty is in the eye of the beholder! There's such a mix of architecture here, I think it's a beautiful place. It's an old city, there's such a wide variety of styles. Still looking to find enough "scummy-looking" buildings to make them the majority. This could take a long time...
I don't think we have the tallest buildings, but I do think we have the best. Those two don't necessarily go hand-in-hand. The Flatiron Building, even at "only" 285 feet, is a beautiful, ornate structure. That Chrysler building is awe-inspiring. The Empire State Building, though an old-timer, is a classic.
There's nothing like coming back from a long cross-country road trip, rolling around a curve in Jersey, and seeing those lights just opening up in front of you, with the good ol' Empire State Building, with its gorgeous colored lights, reaching up there the way it has for decades. I never tire of that. Height isn't what makes a building great; it's all about character.
Who needs phone reception on the subways, anyway? We're allowed to take a break for a while. We're busy folks, but even we can't be available 24 hours a day. If there's an emergency, there are plenty of ways to contact the authorities.
They always flood? Maybe once a year or so...even if they flooded out once a month, that's just over 3% of the time. If my New York City public school education serves me well, that's 97% short of "always"......
I like just about everything about this town. I like its quirkiness, I like its people, I like the fact that there's something for everyone (well, not 100% everyone I guess). I like the fact that the people here are really down-to-earth. I like the fact that sometimes, we flock to the beach, while at other times, we can have snowball fights.
Finally, I love the fact that my Mets took down those Dodgers last October like they were swatting flies. That was enjoyable.

This is an IGNORANT post!! I love living in NYC, and what do you mean what do people like about it? It is one of the best and most enriched places when it comes to movies, music, art, theater, fashion, business, etc.!
And most of the buildings are not SCUMMY...obviously you've never been to Union Square, Times Square, Park Ave, or even Brooklyn heights, downtown Brooklyn, Jamaica Estates in Queens, etc.... EVERY city has some parts that are crappy. You telling me LA doesnt have any crappy looking parts or buildings? I think not!
And those apartments in Manhattan that cost that much are definitely not rat infested, or else the stuck up or posh people that are paying for them would certainly not be living there... I mean come on. New York is a city filled with history, and culture just like all cities are..and btw that part abt the traffic.. ITS THE SAME EXACT THING HERE! The traffic is only really bad during rush hour, and ONLY Manhattan has bad traffic pretty much 24/7. There are 4 other boroughs where you can cruise around just fine in!
And who cares who has the tallest buildings?!?! We don't think we have the tallest buildings!! We don't care! After 9/11 i'm sure the last thing we want is extremely tall buildings anyway! Stop hatin on my city! I'd never live in LA, but i'm sure it's an awesome place to visit, and I respect them all the same.

Conquering New York in one single visit is impossible since is a big town like you will discover with Hotelbye . In New York you can see the Empire State Building, the Statue of Liberty, Central Park, the Metropolitan Museum of Art and significantly more. Empire State Building helps it be worth braving the extended lines, steep ticket prices and dizzying heights to see the city from a premier this storied building. Built in 1931, the skyscraper is the second-tallest making in New York and is one of the very quick designs of Gotham, so significantly to ensure that it's played a part in shows such as for instance King Kong, An Affair to Remember and Sleepless in Seattle.

Well, your first problem is driving. NEVER drive in NYC. What's great about the layout of the city is that it's organized. Avenues go vertically and streets go horizontally. It's easy to find any building you want. If the building is on 52nd and 7th you walk up to 52nd street and over to 7th avenue and BAM there's the building.
Second problem is that you aren't apreciating the atmosphere. sure the building are not the most gorgeous but the architecture of some of them are amazing. Have you seen trump towers on 5th ave? it has trees going up the building.
At christmas time, you won't find anything more beautiful than the 90 foot christmas tree above the ice skating rink in Rockefeller Center!
Nobody gets reception on the subway!!! it's underground. But that's what's good about the subway...it doesn't conflict with the above-ground traffic and it get's you places quickly!
Granted, I agree with you about the apartments...but nothing a little decorating can't help with.
NYC is a great city...you just have to arrive with an open mind!

First of all, REAL New Yorkers rarely drive. We walk. Please do not tell me LA is bad only rush hour/weekends because when Im with my company and we go to LA we joke that LA stands for LATE LATE LATE because traffic is always bad.
The buildings in NYC are all beautiful and many of them are pre-war. Gentrification in NYC is making the raggedy buildings look even more beautiful.
You can get studios for under $1,000,000 in Manhattan. I see some in the New York Times for around $500,000. Anything costing $1 Million in NYC is not rat infested I promise. With all the media hound-dogs and wealthy residents I promise rats are not infesting the apartments.
The Two Rivers around Manhattan (Hudson and East) are very polluted as are many of the waterways and causeways around the LA Metro Area. Pollution in LA is so bad and I know people who have gottan lung cancer due to pollution and are currently settling it with LA city.
Tallest buildings? No. Best buildings? Absolutely. The Sears Tower can not even compare to the elegance and grandoise of the ESB. The ESB is a symbol of power in NYC, the Sears Tower is not. I don't like Chicago. I don't consider it a city-city because it really has few suburbs and goes straight to rural communities as soon as you leave city limits.
Manhattan is very densely populated as well. Mexico City has horrible pollution. Subways are not always dirty infact they are air conditioned and now have extra maitennance. True, they do flood often but Los Angeles mass transit does not hold a candle to NYC's MTA. I get reception on many subway lines with Verizon.
I understand the point you're trying to make but I've been to literally hundreds of cities in USA and throughout the world and I promise, NYC is truly the best.

Well I have a feeling there's nothing I could say to convince you at this point, you sure like to hate on my city.
I love New York, not for the buildings, I realize I'd have to move to Chicago for a more modern American city. I like New York because of the people; it's the culture and the amount of people from all over the world that make it so great.
I'm not going to say it's the greatest city in the world, or even the country for that matter, because it's all subjective. I like New York... it's a city that means something different to every single person.

You're clearly too ignorant to appreciate what the city has to offer, so since you hate it so much...stay out of our:
Art Museums that people FROM AROUND THE WORLD flock to...please don't go to the Met, don't go to the Museum of Modern art to see original work from Vincent Van Gogh...DO NOT EVEN THINK of going to the Guggenheim to see artwork the way Frank Lloyd Wright wanted it to be shown.
Please stay away from our world class dining and restaurants
Don't expand your horizons by dining in China Town, Little Italy, or Little Korea...
Don't lay a foot in any of some of the most world renowned designer stores: Chanel, Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Prada, Tiffany's
Make sure you never ask for directions, because us New Yorkers will disappoint you with our FRIENDLINESS and OPENNESS when we tell you where you want to go, how to get there, and what you might want to try while you're in that neighborhood...
Please, with your attitude, I would prefer you stay out of the state...we don't need people like you.

Hate NYC much?
I love NYC. Its not the landscape that makes the city great. Its the people who make it alive. There is so much art and culture in the city. The buildings are not scummy....at least not in the parts of the city that I usually visit. They are beautiful. Yes some of them are old but the old mixed with the new just adds to the beauty of the city.
I also don't know of any new yorkers who brag about their buildings. All the new yorkers I know brag about various cultural things that make the city great....the museuems and concert halls and the various communities.
NYC also isn't the most expensive city to live in. Yes its pricy....but all major cities are expensive to live. LA is right up there with NYC in that area.

I think New Yorkers have alot more character than Chicago, and will talk to you. Chicago is conservative, and not a friendly city.

Many people like a faster-paced lifestyle that only a place like NY can provide. It's full of cultural events (art shows, museums, theatre, etc.) and an eclectic assortment of people. I see how people can fall in love with the city.
