The terms 'A' & 'B' refer to antigens present on the blood cells. A person with blood group 'O' carries none of these antigens & thats why 'O'. So when a person is blood group A, that means his blood cells carry the antigen A for which he himself is immune, but if the blood from this person is infused into a person with blood group 'O' which doesnt have this antigen 'A' by birth, his body will take the antigen 'A' as a foreign molecule & would initiate an immune response against the donor's blood cells (commonly called as reaction). Thus a person with blood group O carries none of the antigens (neither A nor B), & can donate his blood to any person with any blood group & thus is the universal donor. On the other hand a person with blood group 'AB' can give blood to only blood group 'AB' persons as others wd react against him, but in turn can recieve blood from any blood group as he already has both the antigens by birth & thus wont react against any of these antigens as his body wont take these antigens as foreign molecules. Thus group 'AB' is the universal recipient or Acceptor.

Mmm I cant remember. I think I'm A- with RH negative. I know Im Rh Neg bc I need the shot during pregnancy. For years I thougth I was AB- bc thats what the blood center told me. Apparently they screwed up and were wrong! During blood work for my pregnancies I discovered I was A- (I think). Either way, I was not what my blood center card said!! Good thing I never instantly needed blood and the medics relied on my card! Oye!!
