Here are a few facts BEFORE you answer.. (remember, give substantial reasons, not just opinions like "because I love God." That's so generic and not a reason to base part of your faith on it.)

A Biblical tithe is 10% of certain agricultural products from the land of Israel to be paid by the farmers to the Levites, who in turn tithed to the priests. Wage earners and the poor were exempt from tithing. The poor were allowed to benefit from tithes.

Money and wages are not tithed as money is considered as unrighteous*. Other things not tithed: Unclean animals, beasts of burden, fish, birds, insects, reptiles*. The spoils of battle are not tithed.

All scriptures (including NT) are answerable of "not" being an obligated 10% amount. Tithing was not a NT tenet. Don't forget, the time that Jesus was alive was still "Old Testament". The NT didn't start till AFTER Jesus died and fill the believers with His spirit (Hebrews 9:16,17)

Fyi, the scriptures given are actually a tad out of context. Jesus gave commandment (under OT) to keep tithing but it was never "money", but agricultural. (i.e.' Mint, Cummin, etc.) Also, Abraham gave a once tithe, (not everyweek or paycheck) and he gave "everything" not a tenth. I believed in tithing too. Check out this little quickfax site about it! http://thetithe.org/index.php?pg=howTithe.htm

to answer your ?, read this, "Matt. 22:17" Tell us then what You think about this: Is it lawful to pay tribute [levied on individuals and to be paid yearly] to Caesar or not?" This was not tithing as you say. this was "tribute". Give to Ceasar his tribute, and God's His. Nothing about tithing, sir.

First I would disagree about spoils of war no being tithed. What about when Abram tithed to Melchizedek?

As to tithe in the new testament. People often preach that tithe is a tenant of the law and thus we are not under it. We are not to follow the law. Galatians 3:10 actually says we are under a curse if we follow the law. However what you have to realize is that the principle of tithing was around before the law. Abram tithed before the law. The law merely set the percentage.

I tithe now not because there is a new testament verse saying that I have to but because I want to give to the church. The 10% tithe is a nice round number of my pay to give.

Do I believe that Jesus commands me to give a tenth of what I earn to the church and, if I don't, that I'm committing a sin against God. No, I don't...I don't believe tithing is an "obligation".

However, I do believe that the Lord will reward me for willingly and faithfully giving back some of what he gives me...and I have seen it happen in my life. For me, 10% is the starting point. 10% is a nice round number and easy to calculate. If I claim to believe in the work that my church does, then a decision to support that work includes, in my mind, giving of my time and my money.

When criticizing the Scribes and Pharisees in Matthew 23 Jesus confirmed that tithing should be done as well as not neglecting "the weightier matters of the law: justice, mercy and faith..."

While the funds collected may be put to good use, Tithing is a way for the church to make money, and once you give it, you have no control over what it is used for. I would prefer to just donate directly to charities. Many churches have perveted christianity into a money making scheme. very sad. I doubt its what Jesus had in mind.

I personally believe that tithing works. Evangelist John Hagee says that D.E.B.T is the acronym for "Doing Everything But Tithing." But that, of course, is pulpit preaching :) So I'll give you the personal testimony of a former teacher of mine that I ran into recently. Her son was $30,000 dollars in debt, late on just about every bill that he had coming to him in the mail, and his house was foreclosed on. And he wasn't tithing. So his mother called him to her house and helped him organize his finances to where he could start tithing, and according to her, when he started tithing regularly, God started to relieve him of his financial burdens. My teacher's son is now out of debt within 2-3 years. Now I ask, $30,000 dollars worth of debt eliminated in 2-3 years? That's nothing short of a miracle.

i thought christians were freed from the law.

tithing its just a thing which some churches compel us to do because they want money.

2Corinthians 9:7 "Each of you must give what you have decided in your heart, not with regret or under compulsion, since God loves a cheerful giver"

notice "what you have decided in your heart" in the above verse. its not 10%.
anything you give out of compulsion is worth 0. you should give to help out the church though if you feel it in your heart.

these days most churches love money more than truth, no wonder there is hardly any love and power in the church.

If that's the case, how do you explain what Jesus said to the Pharisees when they tried to trick Him concerning the tax laws when He said, 'Render unto Caesar what is Caesar's and render unto God what is God's"? It makes me believe that we're not exempt from either unless we're totally destitute!

Tithing is unbiblical, and nowhere to be found in the New Testament. The NT says, if you want to give, give freely and cheerfully, and if you don't want to give, don't.
