I'm older than the people on college courses and I can't be bothered with bitchy girls. I want to become a nail technician is this possible. I'd love to become a mobile nail tech, and have my own business.

There is no need to go to college to become a nail technician, however if you can get some sort of certification it will make you look more professional and more likely to get work. You could have it printed on your business cards etc.

Not sure where in the world you are but there are home learning courses available, if you are in UK but there is a company called ICS who run a home based course for a Nail Technician Diploma. It takes 80 hours and needs no previous experience and costs £485. Read all about it at... www.learning-at-home.co.uk

Or there is another slightly cheaper one at www.net-learners.com, same sort of course and only £215.

I'm sure there must be similar courses all around the world.

Hi,
i do not know where are you living or where would you love to work. So the answer for your question is difference.
1. If you are living and love to working in Cambodia, you do not need go to college to be nail technican. You do what you love.
2. If you are living in United State and love to work here, you must get required to be a licensed nail technican. In this case, you must:
Must be at least 17 years old
Must have a high school diploma or GED
Must have graduated from a state-licensed cosmetology program: 600 Nail Technician School Hours or 1200 Apprenticeship Hours (training schools or Apprenticeship Hours are depending on state board where you are living)
Must have passed the state licensing exam

Depends on what state u live in, but usually its based on how many hours is required, since its a trade. Try your states Department Of Regulation, they can tell you how many clock hours u need.

Example: in Illinois, a nail tech needs 350 hours and every odd year 8 hours for Continuing Education

GOOD LUCK!!

EXCUSE ME SCH, "Bitchy Girls" are a sterotype, Shame on you! Dont let that stop u from wanting to make people feel good about themselves, its a great feeling!

Long nails can be harbingers for bacteria, specifically if they are artificial, but these people are good for scratching and opening those little foil wrapped containers that will are so hard to get directly into.

You can apprentice at an establised salon, it takes quite a bit longer than just going to beauty school (about twice the time) and you make less money over the duration...but you can do it.

I would seriously reconsider this job if you can't handle "bitchy girls" it is what the industry is about, even your clients will be bitching to you about their lives and what not. If you want to apprentice for a year and then work for a year to build your clientel then you could open a salon of your own, but you would need to be licensed to do so.

Good Luck :)

I would approach a couple of nail salons in your area and see if they would be willing to train you. There is a salon in my area that trains people which would be better than going to college. However, you don't have to be qualified to do the job, i think it would just help you get more clients if you were.
Good luck

As far as I know of, at least in Texas, you can get a certificate for nails either at a Beauty School or by serving an internship at a nail parlor.

Some salons do one-on-one teaching for a one off payment. Otherwise NCC do a home course that isnt cheap but may be worth looking into
