Yes, Robitussin expectorant - but ONLY the expectorant version. The letters are PE and it doesn't come in generic last I knew. The ingredient is guiafensen (don't quote the spelling). It thins the phlegm so it will loosen. You don't need all the other garbage in the other types because they are counter productive to what you are trying to do. It may not actually thin the already produced phlegm, but it will thin what is being produced and keep it from adding to what is already there.

The steam is a really great suggestion too. But, when it is really tough and showers haven't helped the best thing I've found is to go to an INDOOR swimming pool for a few hours. Get right in and swim, or just sit in the pool area. The humidity in there is absolutely great. I once relieved a 4 day sore throat that way by getting the nastiest chunk of stuck phlegm out with the humidity. (gross I know, sorry)

In addition to that you can try warm beverages with no sugar, but honey instead. Honey from a local source is best because it deals with your local allergens. Sugar suppresses immune function, so is counter productive like the extra ingredients in the non PE Robitussin formulations.

Finally, are you sure it is phlegm? Can you see it? Maybe it is a swelling from irritation? Then I'd just do soups and liquids to see if it would go down - which isn't a bad thing to do with stuck phlegm either.

Take Robitussin expectorant to loosen it up, and make sure you're drinking at least eight to ten 8 oz glasses of water a day. If you are already taking an anti-histamine for your allergies (like Benadryl), sometimes those can cause dryness. Ask your doctor or your pharmacist if you can take Sudafed along with the medication your are already taking.

Steamy showers would help as would some teas. I find hot mint tea helps me "loosen up". You can also try hot and spicy foods. They also help. If you're desperate for immediate relief, you can put a small, thin slice of fresh ginger on your tongue and let it clear out your breathing passages. Remove the slice after a few moments; you don't need to eat it.

Sometimes using a plain saline nose spray can help. You can use it as often as you want. It's not addictive.

Good luck!

Steam, drink lots of water,, and gargle hot salty water. Sooner or later it will *have* to loosen up and come out. I had to do this a lot while fighting bronchitis. It's not much fun.
