There was a time when everyone was addressed by Miss, Mrs., Ms or Mr. as a matter of courtesy. Now, the only times news media use titles is after the person is dead and can no longer appreciate the courtesy.
The lone exception is teachers, who are still Miss or Mrs., but instead of Miss Fisher or Mrs. Brown, they're Miss Anne or Mrs. Martha.

Dust ~ I disagree. I have my individuality (anybody who knows me will attest to that!) and I carry my husband's last name as mine with honor.
For some of the others, I'm not talking about addressing people by their first names, I'm talking about calling them by ONLY their last names.

Yes it's sad that no one uses them anymore. I try to use them as much as I can. I also noticed people don't use sir or ma'am anymore.. it's sad.. it's about common courtesy that's why I teach my 3 1/2 year old to say it

I know what you mean. My children's teachers actually ask to use their first names after Miss, Ms., or Mr. Actually, I don't hear the Mrs. very much anymore. Is it politically incorrect now? I couldn't imagine not using last names even after I turned 18. It is respect as much as manners. I hope you have a good day!

The teachers at my son's school don't use thier first names; you still address them as Mr Smith, Mrs Jones, Ms Johnson; etc. I'd be upset with my son for calling them anything else. I don't hear the Mrs much or Miss either, mostly it all sounds like Ms.
I don't really like being called Mrs. xoxo; it sure makes me feel old. I'd rather be called by my first name.

With people I know casually, or with family members or friends, I am more comfortable being addressed by my first name only. In a more formal situation, or in a business situation, I introduce myself by my first and last name, and appreciate being called Ms. Lastname.

I never let people get away with addressing me by my first name without invitation. Miss Manners has some great suggestions of how to deal with this in a polite way.

Actually, at 14, I adress all adults, with the exceptions of family, with with Miss/Mrs./Mr./Ms. and their last name.

I prefer to address and be addressed by my first name. Referring to someone solely by their father's or husband's last name mutes their individuality.
