I read a few articles before answering this question.By age,Army suicide rate is below national average.By percentage it is up for the current time period.I am a Vet and most of the despondent sailors i counseled were despondent due to family or girlfriend issues. This happened during conflicts as well as during "peace time".Again, when looking at statistics,it is extremely simple to use them to support any argument, even those that are diametrically opposed.

There were 99 suicides. 28 of them from personnel either in Iraq or Afghanistan. The other 71 happened outside those two theaters of operation. All this in a population of over 500,000. The rate is a neat little gimmick of incidents per so many in the population.
Each reason for a suicide is different. There's no empirical evidence about the background of these individuals, the stresses they were under (most self-induced), their psychological makeup prior to joining the service, etc.
But, it gains a headline, gives more "experts" "face time" on TV news outlets and helps sell more hemmorhoid cream and feminine hygiene products.

Well, the Vietnam War was more than 26 years ago. There must have been more suicides during that time because one, many more soldiers were deployed there, and two, the title would have read "Suicide Rate in Army at 40 something-year high" if there were more suicides during this war.

Suicide is an individual choice. It is common world-wide and across the entire spectrum of society, not just soldiers.
Suicide (other than as a noble act to save others, as in the case of Irwin Rommel, who shot himself to save his family from Hitler) is the result of insanity and/or a lack of faith in God (which is also insanity).

We haven't had a major war in over 26 years, of COURSE it will be at it's highest. And yes, you're right. They tell you it's at it's highest, but give no statistics, statistical evidence, numbers, etc. I wonder why?...

That was in the paper yesterday. People on their third and fourth tours of duty in Iraq are at their breaking point. We need to bring back the draft to re-enforce our troops.
