A Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist does essentially what an anesthesiologist does. They give people medications, monitor vital signs, and maintain hemodynamic function. In other words they put people to see prior to operations and maintain them during the procedure.
At some facilities they work independently while at others they work with a supervising anesthesiologist. At a few sites the Anesthesiologist puts the patient to sleep and the anesthetist maintains them.
There is a great need for knowledge and ability here and the risks to the patient are great.
They require in the US a BS (4-5 year at university) in Nursing Degree and status as a Registered Nurse, as well as completion of 2 or more years of study in a Nurse Anesthesia program at the Master's Degree level and certification and licensure as a CRNA.

Administers local, inhalation, intravenous, and other anesthetics prescribed by ANESTHESIOLOGIST (medical ser.) 070.101-010 to induce total or partial loss of sensation or consciousness in patients during surgery, deliveries, or other medical and dental procedures: Fits mask to patient's face, turns dials and sets gauges of equipment to regulate flow of oxygen and gases to administer anesthetic by inhalation method, according to prescribed medical standards. Prepares prescribed solutions and administers local, intravenous, spinal, or other anesthetic, following specified methods and procedures. Notes patient's skin color and dilation of pupils and observes video screen and digital display of computerized equipment to monitor patient's vital signs during anesthesia. Initiates remedial measures to prevent surgical shock or other adverse conditions. Informs physician of patient's condition during anesthesia.
Where I plan to go to school it is a two year course (Masters program) after completing BSN RN, 1 year in adult ICU, ACLS, PALS, 3 specific graduate courses, GRE exam, in hospital observation, interview, and after all of that they only accept 20-25 students per year into the program. You must be highly motivated and highly competetive to get into a program like this.
