I don't know what happened to kill my baby parakeet but he was having very agonizing seizures and wasn't opening his eyes. If you think you may know or happen to know, please let me know. Thank you!

I am sorry but you have seen the effects of ANY animal eating chocolate. It is poison to all animals.

Yeaaa we have a winner in this one, it was John P, Congrats. It's the bromine that will kill, not anything else. Plus chocolate has caffiene in it which can explode a birds heart.

Unless you do a necropsy, you will never know the reason your parakeet died for sure!

Seizures could be caused by zinc poisoning as well.

Sorry mate, but that was very, very bad. It was a death that didn't have to happen. Chocolate is poisonous to all animals, and even a tiny smartie-sized bit can kill a bird. It's not a nice way to go, as you've witnessed. It does the same to us - but it takes about 22 lbs of chocolate to do that to us. If in the future you know or suspect that a bird has eaten chocolate, rush it to the vet straight away.

I have not heard of chocolate affecting parakeets the way you described, only dogs. Maybe you just got a sick bird on your hands and didn't even realize it before it was too late.

"Parakeets are lactose-intolerant and cannot eat a lot of dairy product. Also, parakeets are HIGHLY allergic to chocolate and avocados and should never be given either."
So yes, if the parakeet ate some chocolate you can be pretty sure that this is what killed him : (

Chocolate kills birds due to theobromine poisoning.
Different types of chocolate contain differing amounts of theobromine. Milk chocolate contains about 250 mg per ounce of chocolate, while dark bakers chocolate contains 450 mg.

symptoms of theobromine poisoning include :
vomiting, diarrhea, irregular heartbeat, blackout, seizures, death.

the side effects are constipation and heart complications.
im sorry about your lost, i lost one bird too when i was younger. i used to feed it with seed but also i gave it some sweets, and it killed it. the problem with sweets is all the sacarose and maltose that it has. all that cant be digest by birds.

tropical birds can get some very nasty diseases, some can be transmited to humans - Just so you know

get the bird checked out - and don't dismiss anything you get as a cold. Better safe than sorry.
