We are looking at a used Nissan Altima to buy. Great price but the airbag light was on in the dash. The guy said the passenger side deployed from a minor accident but as far as he knew the drivers side was still there. I always thought that if the airbags o off they both go off. He said he's owned the car for 3 years and it happend before he bought it. "That's what he was told."

Also what does it cost to get an airbag replaced?

I just would feel safer with a car with an airbag. I would hate to be in an accident and have a family member hurt or worse and be told if the airbags would have been working this wouldn't have happened.

I would be very surprised if the passenger airbag deployed but not the driver's side. The opposite could happen in newer cars where the passenger seat detects if the weight of the passenger is over 85lbs, then it will not engage.

If indeed the passenger airbag deployed and not the driver's side, then there was a malfunction.

There are threelikely scenarios here. The malfunction I mentioned, and possibility that both have deployed (which you should be able to discover by examining the steering wheel. Does the steering wheel look replaced, or covered?). The last is that the airbag light may be on because someone was working on the electrical system. This usually requires the manufacturer to go in and turn it off.

In either case, airbag replacement (with matierals) costs betweek 3k-4k per bag because it requires a hazardous materials handling permit.

Pass on this one. Don't buy it! Diagnosing airbag issues can be expensive. Replacements can easily cost over $1,000.

(If your state has an inspection system it will probably fail the safety inspection if the airbag light is on. One more reason to pass on this one.)
