I live 30 miles from NYC and know the weather is unpredictable in early October so go to weather.com several days before you leave to get an idea of what clothes to bring with you. Note: I know they're not 100% accurate, check anyway just to see if it will be sunny, raining, cold or unseasonably warm.
I recommend taking the Gray Line bus tour. It will let you see most of Manhattan and you can get off and on the bus all day since it stops at the more popular sites. You can always go back to one of the places the tour took you on your own time if you want to spend more time there. The tour guides are well-informed and will point out things you'll never find on your own. And they're funny! The tour guides I had were like standup comedians. I went by myself last year and I had a lot of fun. Click below to see if this interests you. Have fun!
