I'm considering joining the military and am really interested in becoming a linguist. I have talked to all of the different branches, and most are telling me that I can't take the DLAB with them until I make some sort of commitment to their branch. Is there some way I could take the DLAB without one of the branches? Thanks!

I took the DLAB before I signed a contract. They DID want to see my ASVAB scores first, but this is one of the tests required to sign up for some jobs. If they're being honest with you, they'll let you take the DLAB before you sign an enlistment contract. By the way, the Army is the only service that I know that will even come close to giving you these type of guarantees.

Just tell the recruiter that you are willing to enlist to be a linguist. If he is unable to help you accomplish this mission, and this includes giving you the DLAB test, you're not going to enlist.

you cannot take the DLAB until you take the ASVAB and qualify to do so based on your line scores. Most recruiters will NOT schedule a DLAB unless they have some sort of commitment. Everybody takes the same test, so find the Branch that otherwise best suits your goals and personality, and stick with that one.

Why? You can't go until you are in the military, so what you need to do is find out which jobs require a language, and sign up for that job.
