I would save yourself a whole lot of bother and pull the plasterboard off as well, fix new plasterboard and tile on top, it is quicker, easier and in the long run cheaper.
I know as I have just done one of these in a bathroom for a client.

Sure - but you may damage the plaster board behind it. That's OK, it can be repaired or replaced.
Get a a stiff-bladed putty knife, or SMALL pry bar from a hardware store. The pry bar would be no more than 6 inches long. Tap one edge of whichever tool you get under the edge of a tile, and pry it up. You may have to work your way around the edges to get it. If you can't get it loose, and they are ceramic tiles, hit them with a hammer and shatter them, then pick the pieces loose.
This will be a dusty, messy job, so expect to have to clean up a lot afterwards. It might be worthwhile to drape everything you can with plastic first. Also, wear eye protection or safety glasses, because the chips of plaster and tile can damage your eyes.

plaster board is cheap enough to replace. it will depend on how well the tiles were put on in the first place. they tend to grip plaster board better because the board dries out from the rear creating suction. try steaming gently.... i did this and it worked. if not you can use a bolster chisel and a hammer but cover your eyes, the shards are lethal!!!
