NO don't use Vaseline it is petroleum based and the little jar they come in would be h haven for germs ... use a good vitamin E cream to help the skin recover ( macro vit e creme is a good one ) and it comes i a tube so you don't have to keep dipping in the jar :)

The first 24 Hours
2 hours after getting your tattoo you want to wash your tattoo with soap and water, (preferably a nice liquid anti-bacterial soap) make sure you wash your hands first, and only use your hands to wash the tattoo.

don't use any wash cloths or other scrubbing devices. (These items will irritate that tattoo and possibly cause some of the color to be pulled out)

You want to get rid of all the sticky Sirius fluid build-up (Sirius fluids are the fluids that your body releases that create scabbing).

Pat-dry the washed tattoo with a towel.

Things Not To Do!!!
Do not soak in a Bath, Jacuzzi or Hot Tub!

Do not expose it to sun or tanning beds until it is fully healed!

Do not pick, peal or scratch at your tattoo while it's healing!

Do not over moisturize your tattooApplying Moisturizers
Apply a VERY small amount of baby lotion or if you have Noxzema use that. You want to rub in the lotion like you would applying it to your hands, rub it all the way in.

You don't want to see a Coating of lotion over the top of your tattoo. (Coating your tattoo will suffocate your tattoo and cause a few different things to occur, such as release of more fluids as your body attempts to clear way for oxygen so that it may breath cause a large and puffy scab.

Also, if your tattooed area can not breath it will take longer to heal which will allow more time for it to get abused and possibly affect the the healing in of the pigments.)

You shouldn't have to apply lotion to your tattoo more then once every 5-7 hours, Noxzema Users more often than lotion users. When using Noxzema as with most lotions, you'll know you've rubbed it in well when you can't see the white color of the product anymore, if it stays white take some of it off, you've probably used to much.

Lotion will probably sting just a little bit for a minute or so after applying it to freshly tattooed area for the first day or 2. This is usually the steric acid in them, It's normal for most people to experience this.

Do Not apply a bangdage to your tattoo! (Your tattoo needs to breath to heal properly and covering it will keep it from doing that.)

The night you get your tattoo you may want to wear something over the tattooed area that you wont mind getting dirty. The tattoo will release a little bit of color and possibly some body fluids when you sleep on the area, so don't be surprised if you get some sort of imprint on the inside of your clothes that night, this is very common.

Keep it clean, and lightly moisturize and your tattoo will heal very fast. Some people heal faster then others, Your tattoo should have very little raised scab area utilizing this technique, but some people will scab no matter what.

Best possible results will be a light scabbing, that of a sunburn dead skin pealing is the best possible results.

There will be a healing time when your tattoo will itch really bad, in this case, just apply lotion a little more often.

Do Not Scratch or pick your tattoo!

After 2 days all the redness should be gone from around your tattoo. If the area your tattoo is turns Bright red and burns really bad after two days, chances are you have a skin infection, These are common with getting tattoo's, the key is recognizing it as soon as possible and taking care of it before it gets worse.

If you do get a slight skin infection I suggest that you use either Neo-sporin or some type of anti-biotic cream , use it just like you did the lotion in a very small amount and rubbing it all the way in.

Make sure your hands are clean when applying it. If the burning in redness don't go away in 12 to 24 hours, See your doctor As Soon As You can! Usually in most cases the neo-sporin etc will take care of slight skin infections, but you can never be too safe.
i hope that helped some what

Use white unscented mouisturizer for two weeks as many times a day as possible. Do not cover them and do not let them scab, the scab will draw out the ink and itll fade. Itll take about two weeks to heal through.
In the future make sure when you go outside to put sunscreen on it to prevent blotching and fading.
Your tattoo studio really should have told you this.

the tat artist should have told you this:

1. leave the original bandage on for 3-4 hours only
2. wash the tat with gentle soap (dial) and water twice a day or as needed after sweating etc.
3. apply light, unscented lotion after washing (lubriderm, curel) don't use vaseline as it doesn't let the pores breathe
4. apply lotion as needed throughout the day to prevent dryness (i do 5-6 times a day)
5. when tat starts to scab/peel/itch DO NOT PICK, apply lotion and keep washing
6. once fully healed (feels flush with skin, no difference, approx. 2 weeks) you can submerge it in water again, but do not swim, take baths (showers are fine), or expose to sun before than
7. wear sunscreen on the tat if you go out in the sun
8. enjoy your new tat!

i was told never to put vaseline on a tattoo. the exact instructions that my artist gave me are as follows:

-keep covered with plastic wrap for an hour after getting a tattoo
-wash with cold water and antibacterial soap
-apply a&d ointment or preperation h liberally, let set for a minute, then wipe of the excess ointment
-DO NOT LET TATTOO DRY UP!!!
-after third day, use unscented lotion (lubriderm is recommended) until last flake

DO NOT:
-scratch/pick at a tattoo
-go tanning or be in the sun without using a high SPF sunblock
-go into lakes, ponds, creeks, oceans or swimming pools for a minimum of ten days after getting a tattoo

i hope this helps. good luck. and for future reference... i would definitely be weary of a tattoo artist whom gave you no aftercare instructions...

why didn't you ask your artist these questions? geez. put a permanent frickin drawing on your body, and you go home and have no clue how to take care of it. smart move girl. genius really.
first you should have washed it with antibacterial soap within a few hours of having it done. and wash it everyday atleast 3 times a day until it heals with antibacterial soap. dial liquid is easist to use. dont' use a wash cloth on it and pat it dry lightly.
don't use vaseline. that's the dumbest thing you could do. it will only cause the tat to heal slower and poorly. it won't allow the scab to breath and will probably crack and fade. use a baby lotion, like aveeno baby lotion.it gives the right ammount of moisture and will let the scab breath. next time, ask more questions of your artist. you are gonna have this thing forever. take better care of it.

I have several tattoos and with all of them I took quick showers for two weeks afterwards, kept them out of sun and swimming pool for two weeks.

I use Aquaphor lotion which you can get at any Target/Walgreens/etc. 3 to 4 times a day for two weeks. First wash tattoo with antibacteriol hand soap; the kind that comes in a pump and pat dry with paper towel. Then apply thin coat of Aquaphor. Dab off excess lotion with a paper towel. Do not itch or pull scabs off. All my tattoos turned out great with that regiment.

Geez, the biggest misconception when getting tattoos, is people think that Vaseline is good for them. I actually had the ink surface using Vaseline. A&D Ointment allows moisture to get to your tattoo so that it doesn't flake and heal improperly. Please, don't EVER use Vaseline. You should always ask the tattoo artist what works best...always.

No vaseline!!!!! A&D ointment for the first 2-3 days followed by Lubriderm lotion for a few weeks 'til there is no scab or peeling skin.

The way my artist tell me to do it is...
wash it twice a day with antibacterial soap
other than that let it dry up
a&d and such does not allow the tattoo to breath
if you do want to put some on put a very very little bit if any at all..dont allow it to get dirty
when it begins to heal and starts itching us a little bit of unsented alcohol free lotion
it will peel and flake..dont pick at it!
thats it...
