As with any part of the country, the devil runs rampant.
That's why.
But Christ has won the ultimate victory on the cross!
Praise God

I happen to live in the buckle of the bible belt (in my opinion anyway). I live ten minutes from Bob Jones University. I'm not sure how many "anti-religious" people live in this area, but I do know that there are quite a few Atheists and Agnostics around. There are also a good number of believers who are rather fed up with organized religion. This town is quickly changing, and one reason for that is that some people (believers and non-believers both) are very fed up with the religious fanatics trying to run this town.
Religion plays a major part in everything here, and there are a good many who feel that there should be limits. The control that is displayed in the political system here by those who take religion to the extreme can sometimes get out of hand.

I live in the bible belt, and it is not that I am anti religious but more like, freedom to choose, freedom to respect another persons belief or lack of one, moving away from the traditional beliefs that are based on fear, for example,"if I do not accept Jesus as my personal savior, I'm gonna burn in hell" If I do not confess & repent my sins, I will stand on the day of judgment and be sent to hell. I just do not believe in that anymore, and am seeking, learning and growing spiritually elsewhere.
Blessings

Oh darlin - there's a gent with a beautifully painted, sparkling yellow, brand new VW Bug here that has etched into the paint of his rear hood (The engine is in the back, not front, right?) words railing against faith and God in lovely red font.
To go to THAT kind of expense indicates vehement hatred.
We live in a town that has been in the Guiness Book of World Records for most number of churches per capita - and yet we still have public demonstrations against people of faith here.
The percentage of those who are anti-religion is small - but it disturbs them greatly to have so large a populace not think the way they do - so they rail against the ones they perceive as thier opposition.
All we can do is look at them with the eyes of Christ and show them love as He does.
Remember the elements of love are: patience, never jealous, boastful, proud, or rude. Love isn't selfish or quick tempered. It doesn't keep a record of wrongs that others do. Love rejoices in the truth, but not in evil. Love is always supportive, loyal, hopeful, and trusting. Love never fails!
Love those who despise you. It is what Jesus asked of us.
Peace dear one.

I live in the heart of the Bible belt and I am anti-religious. R & S is the only place that I can speak freely without being hated.

Have you lost your ever loving mind? If you really think that, then you don't live in the Bible Belt.

Perhaps they are getting tired of being associated with zealots. They might be getting tired of the stereotype of the ignorant, racist, zealot redneck.
In an interview with Christopher Hitchens, he said that his book, "God is Not Great", sold best in the south. It might be that we're finally breaking through the social indoctrination down there. People might finally be coming around to see religious superstition for what it is.

I live in the Bible Belt.
Anti religious? Who do you count as anti-religious? People of other faiths? People who don't subscribe to your faith? Anyone who thinks religion is a private choice and should not be taught in schools? People who don't like to be proselytized at work and in public? Anyone of any religion who believes in the separation of religion and state?

Because there are many types of people everywhere. Just because this is the bible belt, doesn't mean we all practice the same religion....I myself am not Christian, yet I live in the heart of southern Baptist land! lol

I think that there are plenty of atheists where I live, they do not get together in their own churches or have food drives to feed to poor but they exist serving themselves all around me.
(Anti- religious sounds dumb why not say atheist?)
