Because it (through its followers) inhibits their ability to live a free life in accordance with their own wishes.

For many, its because of the Churches.
They teach their own words instead of Gods Word. When people are lied to or told things that sound like nonsense and then are expected to blindly follow it, it makes them very angry.
God would prefer a person not follow nonsense if thats what is being put out.
There are alot of reasons for people to be furious with religion.
Our Catholic Church where all 6 of my brothers and sisters went to school, church and sunday school, and where my dad had gone to church for 73 total years, told us that our mom couldn't be buried with the rest of us because as a child she was brought up in a methodist home.
Needless to say, that was the last time I went into that Church, and I will never return there.
There is a lady who lives two miles from us.
They were a Catholic Family. The husband was found guilty of molesting (penetration included) their 3 and 5 yr old daughters.
The husband went to jail for only one year (?). The wife's Priest told her she HAD TO ACCEPT HIM BACK AS HER HUSBAND, or she would go to hell. She did, and of course that meant the 3 and 5 yr old little girls were made wards of the State and live in residential institutions. At that time is when they needed more love and care and time from their mom, but that priest caused this instead. The 5 yr. old is now 10 and has tried to kill herself twice since she's been taken away. The husband enjoys
his retirement and goes to the shore every summer. Thats a damn good reason to hate religion. BUT NOT TO HATE GOD.
God never told her to do this - some damn Priest did who has no idea what the Word of God says. To make matters even worse, recently the same Priest told the wife
who now has a granddaughter from her son,
that she has to allow the husband time with the granddaughter so as to prove himself a good man still. WHAT? LEAVE THAT CREEP ALONE WITH ANOTHER LITTLE GIRL? DOESN'T THIS INFURIATE YOU?
I am a devout Christian, but I follow the Word of God, not the words of men.
When Christ returns, if he doesn't rip the cloth off that priest I will do it myself, and don't think I haven't given it thought now.

There are many reasons that people develop a hate of religion, but the most overwhelmingly obvious one is that many of various beliefs have had a judeo-christian "standard" preached at them, shoved down their throats, shoved into every orrifice they possess and still told they are "failures in the eyes of God" no matter HOW good a a life they lead in connection with their families and communities because they don't believe a man hung on a cross several thousand years ago to "save them from hell" by paying ahead for their sins with his own blood. Frankly, I think it is that the common sense has gone out of most people, for they can't seem to see that the "truth" of the matter is that there is a grain of truth in all world religions that speaks the "true nature" of the Universe--if you're only willing to LOOK at it without Fear. Thus, again, hatred can easily be built out of Fear and that is one of the strongest things that mainstream faiths are built on. Be afraid for your soul... be VERY afraid! "Fear God"?...... nonsense. Fear yourself--for you are the only one that can truly jackpot your own life.

I think its because we humans r selfish (kinda included and came with the package in the sin of adam and eve) and selfish if u really think about it, can be a bases of sin. so, as people being selfish they would like things to turn in their way during hadship, and being selfish we look to our self as deserving every bit of the world "don't we", and so they look for a divine intervene. well, during this seeking of their devine intervene, they grow wary to what results that does not come their way. not already having a firm belief but thinking that they have deserved an award to have all of a sudden made best friends with the supernatural. they turn away easily to what results thats not being awarded. that's what we call lack of faith in my religion but this people don't see it as being a lack of faith. they see it as the religions that they've invested time and effort (selfish), being a waist of time and effort (being selfish they fall to have had no result). disappointed to have not been awarded, when the topic of religion is spoken they turn away or get furious to how you have described.
During the above tribulation is a blessing that the none believers don't know as. for that, what i've discribed is God working with you, me , and them to come out has a humble person not to be selfish.
another would be, people in their selfishness credit to what they've conquered and establish for themselves (idol warship in my religion) and so they get angry to even mention about any religion being a cause other then themself.
oh, and i'm only human and can't be to what i've described either but we Christians try and try to come out only to be humble.
another thing, i am a believer but not a good one but i am in a tribulation to have noticed this in my walk as a Christian to share what i think is the answer to u'r question. could be right or wrong but i only share an opinion.
hope i helped and have a good one.

I get FURIOUS about anyone/anything that tries to control my life. I get FURIOUS about violence done in the name of invisible, imaginary beings. I get FURIOUS when religious folks block medical advancements that will help thousands of innocent people because they believe their invisible, imaginary being will get "mad" about it. I get FURIOUS about innocent people being told they can't get married because they happen to be the same sex and some invisible, imaginary being supposedly doesn't like it.

because if religion is true than that would result in them going to hell, which they dont want so they deny, making it false in their own minds thinking that this way they wont go to hell
[this doesnt apply to everyone]
