We have lots of thistles and weeds on our back lawn at the moment and need to spray it. But we have two cavaliers, they are mainly inside dogs but go outside for the toilet. Is it safe to spray weed killer with pets around? Thanks.

I don't know about other brands, but I called the company that makes Roundup several years ago and asked them that exact question. They said as long as it has dried it would not harm pets. If it was still wet it would definitely harm them if they ingested it. I've been using it in my backyard for quite sometime with no ill effects to my dog. Then again, maybe that's why he's so goofy!

Are your dogs the Bull Terrier "white cavaliers" ?? We`ve owned them for many years now , and presently have only a white and brindle ................ Great dogs/pets !

We don`t use any commercial herbicides because of our dogs , anywhere on our property . The little bit we do use is homemade , and non-toxic . It`s much cheaper , safer , and quite effective .

Here`s the "recipe" :

• 1 gallon of white vinegar.

• 1 cup of table salt.

• 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap.

You can cut the ingredients in half , or even 1/4 if you don`t want to make too much at any one time .

Spray only the leafy part of the weeds . Don`t spray if there`s a possibility of rain within the next 2 hours , or it`ll just be wasted .

When used according to label directions (which is the law) most herbicides that are safe to use in desirable turf grasses are also in a category that the EPA refers to as having "negligible residual effect". A product call Manage is the least harsh of all of them, but may take more than one treatment. Your dogs should be just fine.

There are weed killer's that are pet friendly. You just have to look for them. Go to your garden center and ask if they carry them. One is the Good Earth. See if your garden center carries this line of lawn products.

No. If the stuff kills weeds, it's sure to hurt your dogs too.

You might do better to get a backhoe or some other heavy equipment to level your lawn, if it's overgrown like you indicate. And then reseed where it needs to be done.

I don't suggest that you do because they could eat it. But if you look about you could find a weed killer that is pet friendly and has no deadly chemicals in it.
