Understanding your frustration...one must first consider where the comments originate from. Most likely those who say we, as a society, don't need police....are thugs and criminals themselves who recently were in trouble for breaking a law.
Their problem is simply...immaturity and inability to accept responsibility for their own troubles! I would specifically point out someone such as "Monk" who goes around the Yahoo Forums spewing his rhetoric about how all police are this and that. Seems to me only one or two problems exist with this type of individual...1) they've been busted for breaking the law a time or two; or 2) they fell short of meeting the standards!
I'm glad to see your comment and only wish you to "hang in there!"
I know when I go home after a long day....I can smile knowing I helped people who couldn't help themselves and made my community a better and safer place to live!
Best wishes.

Oh boo hoo, boo hoo. Why are you always on the side of the police? What, do you think if you are chummy with them, you will never get arrested?
This is supposed to be a free country and people have the right to complain, although its better when they can support what they say with some facts. Or as long as they can take the reactionary criticism from the police and the brownnosers. If you think the police are always wonderful, then you are in La la land.

True, cops are expensive, but we do need them. I do not think anyone, even criminals (they probably do not pay taxes), will make an comment like that. If you really read this in an article, please post the source. Since the age of men, gang, drug and crime are a problem. It is not a new problem, but it is definitely a problem.

Drugs being illegal is no different than prohibition. I am amazed that we do not see that most crime is drug related, and most of that crime is drug trafficking. I am not necessarily supporting some of the more dangerous drugs, just the ones that are less harmful than alcohol, which is ranked 5 on the worst drugs list, weed is 11th. My point is that we need less cops if we stop patrolling victim less crimes, and cops are much safer as they are less of a threat to the lower class, that needs the drugs to cope with living in such a judgmental culture.
Freedom is based on doing as one likes without harming another...
again.... gangs are mostly drug trafficking related. Of course we need police, but not nearly as much if we are free to do as we like,,,,,
read up on prohibition and the war... it was stupid to deny people what they want,,,,

Wait...who said crime was unimportant and that we didn't need police? I've heard alot of crazy things coming from people on this site, but I've never heard anyone say we don't need cops because they are too expensive...

I've heard very few people claim something that stupid. The only ones who would are criminals and I think it is fairly obvious that they are already stupid, or they wouldn't need to turn to a life of crime.

The only ones who think that we don't need cops are the pot-heads on here promoting marijuana. Don't pay much attention to their ramblings because, understandingly, they don't have good reasoning skills and their judgment is pretty impaired.

It's horrible. There is no freedom without the law. we need un corrupted policemen and women to protect and serve, I for one have respect for those who risk life and limb to uphold the law.

Your questions are a bit too simple, it’s not just the cost of police, it’s also the cost of the court systems and jails. On top of these costs, we also have a lot of problems with locking up non-violent people. Haven’t you ever wondered if petty law breakers ever move onto commit more serious crime? I have.
Since 1980, we’ve made a lot of ordinance infractions criminal. We’ve taken traffic violations and made them criminal. We’ve taken misdemeanors and turned them into felonies. For things that weren’t covered prior to 1980, we’ve made a lot of them illegal. Is it any wonder why we spend so much money on crime? We’ve made so many things criminal, drastically increased police to find the criminals, courts to prosecute criminals, and jails to hold the criminals, that it’s ludicrous to make these agencies bigger!
Police do not prevent crime. I would never want to see the police prevent crime. In order to prevent crime, you must assume that somebody is going to do something before they do it. In other words, we’re going to have to lock up a lot of innocent people because of what we thought they were going to do in order to catch the small percentage that were actually going to do what they’re accused of. We currently lock up a lot of people because of what we think they were going to do. We severely punish people because if they’ve already done this, well then we think that they’re going to do that.
Making drugs a criminal charge creates a lot of the crime that it’s actually trying to prevent. Take a look at what prohibition did for organized crime. Prohibition created more crime than what it prevented.
DUI = jail. Why are we locking up non-violent people? Because of what we think that they’re going to do… .08 isn’t drunk for everybody. We lock up people for drunk driving because we think that they could have killed somebody… What about all the stone cold sober drivers that are killing people everyday? 2 out of every 3 traffic fatalities in America are committed by young sober drivers. It’s apparent that speeding, cell phone use, and all that irresponsible driving entails is actually killing more people than the drunks are. Should we lock people up for these other traffic violations? No we shouldn’t and we should stop making DUI a criminal charge.
Wife beaters… Before this was a serious criminal charge, it was already a crime. Ok some nitwit beats his wife. It was already a crime. If the women kept dropping the charges and staying with the man, that should tell you something about these women. The women obviously have issues as serious as the men that beat them. These women go through life being beaten by every man that they’re with. I’ve also seen these “poor” women beat their own kids. A battered woman deserves no compassion, she’s no victim but rather a sick individual. The only thing that she deserves is proper treatment so that she can stop selecting men that beat her. Half of them actually instigate the beating. If you give them a man that doesn’t beat them guess what they do, they leave them and find a man that actually beats them.
Prostitution… because it’s illegal it makes it seedy. It also causes it to surface in unwanted areas of town. Because it’s so seedy, a lot of drug addicts use to keep up their habits. It also forces a lot of women under the thumb of oppressive pimps. Take a look at countries that have legalized prostitution. It’s not seedy, women aren’t drug addicts, there aren’t any oppressive pimps, and it’s only in certain parts of the city. In other words, if you don’t want to see prostitutes, you don’t have to.
Dead beat dads… The amount of money allotted for child support is unfair. It’s four times cheaper to support a wife and child that lives with you than to pay support for them if they leave. What do we do with these extorted men? We make them criminals and throw them in jail. It’s cheaper to murder your soon to be ex-wife in a fit of passion than it is to pay to support her. It’s also possible to do a lot less jail time.
If we did away with most criminal offenses and only kept the barebones serious ones, we wouldn’t have to spend such huge amounts of money. We wouldn’t need as many cops and the ones that we do have could better concentrate on people committing serious crimes of murder, rape, robbery, arson, aggravated assault, and other violent acts of crime.
Over zealous enforcement of Draconian laws creates criminals. We’re currently converting people into criminals by taking petty ordinance breakers and throwing them behind bars. Not only does it embitter them when they go to jail, but it also affects them greatly by placing them in a defenseless position behind bars with violent people. I’m not too fond of taking nonviolent people and turning them into enraged criminals that plot crimes against the society that’s locked them up for such petty things.
It’s time to wake up, your puritan views aren’t working. It’s only making matters worse.
Gangs, drugs, and crime aren't a problem. How many people do you personally know that were the victim of some crime? I bet you don't know any. Unless you live in some ghetto, crime isn't everywhere!
