From overseas fly to Sydney and then take the domestic flight to Canberra. Alternately take a train or a bus, or buy a car and drive yourself. If you are feeling wealthy you could perhaps take a taxi but you'd have to find one willing to do the distance.
Cycling the distance would take two days or three and you could walk it in less than a week. (You Always Have Other Options).

Canberra is a beautiful city at any time of the year with a lot to see including the National Gallery, Questacon, the War memorial, Parliament House (old and new) etc. It has good restaurants and a limited but interesting nightlife. Getting there from Sydney is easy. It is a comfortable three hour drive on freeway all the way or a 25 minute plane flight. You can also get a bus or a train.

Yes. People can and do travel to Canberra, it's amazing. You can go on the greyhound that goes on the Sydney-Melbourne route (or vice-versa) or can take the XPT train on the same route however you will have to get a bus from cootamundra. I think this answers your question...

canberra is a pretty small and generally boring place, but if you are interested in australian politics or war history its very interesting. the war memorial is great, i love it!
