The typical first aid kit you would purchase from a store would include:
Band aids (all sizes)
Gauze (rolls as well as different sized squares)
Medical tape
Scissors (in case clothing needs to be cut away from a wound)
A bottle of eye wash
Tweezers
Alcohol pads
Popsicle sticks/tongue depressors (Can be used for finger splints)
A few Q-Tips
Gloves (if worried about latex allergies, you can get the non-latex variety)
Antiseptic hand wipes
Instant Hot and Cold Pack (more than one if you want to be prepared to treat heat stroke)
Antacid tablets
Allergy tablets
Triple Antibiotic Ointment
Insect sting relief
Tylenol/Aspirin/Ibuprofen (keep in mind that some people may have sensitivity to aspirin, and it may be a good idea to have more than one option for them - at the same time, apsirin can come in handy if someone thinks they're having a heart attack)
Burn cream or spray
A couple of triangular bandages/cloths (to make a temporary sling)
You may also want to consider:
A CPR face shield
Blood pressure kit (if you really wanna be prepared)
Glucose tablets or gel (for a diabetic emergency)
Depending on how much you want to be prepared for, you may not find all of these things useful. But if you want to be prepared for most injuries and illnesses, then the above list will certainly help you in that.

Band Aids of all sizes, gauze pads, neosporin or an triple antibiotic cream, peroxide or alcohol which ever you prefer I would use alcohol and get the swabs, burn cream, calamine lotion, I would also put some solarcaine spray for sunburns, make sure you have rubber gloves, and first aid tape.
These are just the basics you can add what you want to it but this is a good basic first aid kit also everything is your own preference like if you find something that you like better than calamine lotion for the bug bites then get that. And make sure you have a water resistant container for your first aid kit.

You will need band-aids and bandages, peroxide to help clean wounds, rubbing alcohol, and a good pair of scissors. You might want a box of baking soda: That stuff is good for bug bites and stings. You'll want a tube of Neosporin or some other antibiotic ointment. And for burns, a jar of aloe gel is good. You might even include aspirin or Tylenol for a pain-killer.
If you're looking at a very advanced first aid kit, you'll want to add supplies to make splints, tongue depressors (the popsicle-stick things), and supplies for an emergency tracheotomy.
Good luck!

If you don't want to just buy one, here's what you will need to make one:
All kits MUST have:
At least five of all sizes of band-aids (large ones for scrapes, waterproof ones, normal sized, one's specially fit for fingers and other parts of the body, and really small ones for hard to reach places such as the ears)
Steril gozz
Alcohol prep pads (for cleaning cuts)
A few popsicle sticks (sanitized, for use with almost anything)
Rubber gloves, since it would be no good to be helping someone who's bleeding then contract a bloodboure desies (AIDs, HIV, HPV, etc)
Also, if you're trained in CPR:
A resecution mask (A rubber doughnut shapped tube with a one way valve on it, to prevent sharing blood and saliva. Their also good since it prevents the victim from throwing up in your mouth, which is always fun)
For a medium kit, add:
Water (for drinking or washing wounds with)
Cold/hot packs
Rubbing alcohol
Bug bite cream
And if you want to go all out:
A BVM (Baf Value Mask, for attaaching to a mask to deliever more oxygen)
An AED (Automatic External Defibulator, for restarting hearts)
An Oxygen tank
But if you're not trained in using these things, don't use them. You can easily kill yourself trying to operate an AED if you don't know how to work it.

Ask a pharmisist to help you put one together. You should go to wal mart or something so it's not that expensive.
