I have a 14yr old boy and a 10yr old girl. My son will start highschool this year and will enroll for football. This means that I will have to go straight home for my daughter b/c her brother wont be home to watch her. I'd like to put her in an activity, since I read a good article to keep my kids active. Is this a bad idea? Or what are some good but affordable activites can I enroll her for?

I think it is a great idea to get your kids involved in as many activities as possible. It all depends on her personality for what to enroll her in. There's always dance classes for young girls that age that are terrific fun (i did them myself). Other than that check your local library for any activities they have going on.

Go to the gym and don't worry.Your daughter is 10,not 2.She is not a baby anymore, she can take care of herself for at least half a day. When I was 7 I went to school in the morning and went back home at noon with NOBODY at home until the evening.I learned to take care of myself and it wasn't problem at all.Since a 7-year-old is mature enough not to get in trouble or anything, why a 10-year-old isn't?No,the question should be "Why do YOU think she isn't mature and responsible enough?".Anyway if you think she would suddenly become mature (to even watch after a sibling) at 13-14 (as your son),wait a few more years and then go to the gym.But I highly doubt she will become THAT mature and responsible for 2-3 years (as you say if you let a 4 years older boy to "watch after her").

It's not a bad idea for her to have some kind of club or activity, but really, a 10 year old should be able to be alone for an hour or so while you go to the gym.

There are 24 hour gyms that have childcare available and some of them--Rush fitness 24/7--have programs for children where they can work with a PT while you work out. They have a rock climbing wall and a swimming pool.
