I assume most people who have tattoos have gotten this "reason" for not getting a tattoo before:
"just think how saggy, blurry, faded, wrinkly, nasty it will look when you're 80"
how is this a "valid" argument against someone getting a tattoo?!? I am getting a tattoo now, in the prime of my life (i'm 23 by the way) because it has deep meaning to me and is something that I love. I absolutely adore all of my tats and planned them out at least a year in advance to make sure I wanted them. I have heard from multiple people the line about how bad they will look when I'm old. But think about this, how many 80 year olds do you know who are very concerned with their appearance? My tattoos are a part of me and will age with me, as my beauty and youth fade, so will my tattoos. I will wrinkle and sag, and so will they. This doesn't mean that they will have any less meaning for me or not bring up the same feelings that they do now. I agree if you're some trendy idiot that got a "sexy"...

tattoo, and you got it just to be "sexy", then yes, you probably will look at it when you're 80 and think you were stupid, but I'm just so sick of the "looking bad whenyou're old excuse" A tattoo has meaning whether it is clear and crisp or old and weathered with time, some of the more meaningful tattoos are the ones on older men, that as they smooth them out they reminisce and tell the story and bring up a lot of emotion. What are your thoughts, good/bad on this line of defense against getting a tattoo?

to clarify:

I already have tattoos, and I love them both, also they are both in places that will be hidden by most clothing, and older people really don't show that much skin, so I'm not worried about them in family pictures and things like that.

I don't have any tattoos, and have no immediate plans to get one. But I can understand your point.

My personal arguement against myself at the moment is that I don't know what I would get and it wouldn't have enough meaning for me (at this point in my life) for me to brand myself for life.

As far as the 'wrinkly and old' tattoos, I guess it would depend on where you get it. If I do get one, I'd like for it not to stretch etc. too early in life...ruling out anywhere that might stretch during pregnancy.

You seem pretty switched on, and haven't gotten a tattoo for the wrong reason (i.e. after a night of binge drinking). I think you should ignore what people say about it, its your body. And people should be more concerned about their own...especially when the diets and lifestyles of a lot of the worlds population may mean they don't make it to 80 year olds...

Why would you care what it will look like when your old. It's like you said it is part of who you are. When you get old it will tell people who you were. I have one and alot of people my age have one 40's. Girls your age have one or more. There will be alot of old people out there with tats in the future so it won't matter. It will probably be the most common thing.

By all means get the tattooes!
But don't forget - there's more time in a lifetime than now (23) and the end (80). What about when you're 40 and have kids in school and they want to bring friends home. What about when you're 50 and your husband wants to take you on the office picnic or to the office Christmas dance. How about when you're 60 and you have new grand-kids in the family photos. And 70 when you're dressing in lighter colors to look as nice as you can. Those tattooes will be right along with you through all of that. If they're meaningful to you, by all means, get them. If they're not, however, you may one day wish you hadn't had them applied

I hear it alot. It isn't valid, because you can go get touch ups, and that helps it to age better. I have one, and I am thinking about some others, but I have to get my money situation figured out first... Anywho, My tattoo I got for me, noone else, and it seems that you did that also. They can say what they want, but it doesn't matter, because it is your body, money, life, choice and everything else.

yes they will sag and fade as you grow older, but if that's what you want then who cares? you have plenty of time before you get all saggy baggy!

who says all older people dont care about their appearance? Not all of them are like that, I'm sure.
besides, if you're so sure about getting the tattoo, then get it and stop trying to justify it. it's pointless to have posted this if you know what you want to do already.
