Get a couple of books on beginning photography. "Understanding Exposure", by Bryan Peterson is a good one to begin to learn about light. Visit the websites of professionals and study their images. Try to duplicate some of your favorites in your world.

Study your camera manual. Learn what the settings are and how they affect your picture.

Look at the light everywhere you go. Notice how sunlight changes throughout the day. Take pictures of the same place at different times of day. Note the change it makes in your image. Set up a still life and take pictures using different lighting. You can use natural light, reflectors, flash, table lamps, studio lighting, whatever you have. Vary your exposure and experiment. Take notes as you go. With digital, it doesn't cost anything to experiment. Also you might want to get a book or two on art. Still life images require lots of compositional skill and light control to look their best, art is a great place to learn more about that.

There are some great photo sites, both for browsing and learning. www.photo.net (great forums, but does contain some amount of nudes in the galleries, but overall the best galleries for variety and professional looking work) www.kodak.com, www.betterphoto.com, and www.nyip.com.

Good luck and enjoy your hobby!

get a tripod and spend some time looking through your camera and constantly checking the composition is good, then play around with lighting, use bits of white card as reflectors etc, even mirrors for bouncing in extra light.
Have fun
