I work with a lot of clients who have dementia/brain injuries, etc. I often need financial info., preferably tax info. I am not sure if i call the IRS that they can give me the info. I also don't want my clients to be investigated if they havn't filed. Any suggestions??

You need to have power of Attorney to request info from the IRS. Form 2848, is the form that you need. Once you have that you can get information from the irs for them.

Unless your clients have given you a Power of Attorney specifically for tax matters, the IRS will not release any information to you. This is a matter of federal law to protect the clients.

My suggestion is that you contact the family member who is responsible for that person.

Your best bet is to call the IRS. Explain the situation, and then ask if you can check on the Filing Status of the individual. If there are no filings then immediately apply over the phone with the less than happy person at the IRS for an extension.

Sorry, but tax returns are confidential between the IRS and the taxpayer. You have no legal entitlement to that information.

The Social Security Office knows.
People get sent a report every year stating what they claimed as an income.
Are there any family members to ask?
