You don't need more food, you need higher quality food. You only need 150kcal more the first few months and 200-300 additional calories a day in the last trimester. That's the equivalent of 2 large pieces of fruit, a small slice of pie, or a generous serving of ice cream, so don't binge, or you'll end up with lots of weight to lose.
Try to eat small meals, eat lean protein like chicken, turkey and low-mercury fish (all well-cooked, to prevent disease), lots of veggies, especially greens, fruit, dairy.
if you normally work out, keep working out, just tone it down a notch to a level that's comfortable for you. If you haven't been working out, you can try walking or leisurly swimming.
If you normally have an OK diet, and you eat lots of dark greens (folic acid), you don't need to eat a lot more. Even if you don't eat more than you usually do, your kid will be ok, as long as you eat balanced food (your body may suffer, but the fetus will take the nutrients it needs)

You shouldn't eat anymore than what you would normally eat as the old wives tale that "you're eating for two" is crap! The only thing extra you should be doing is drinking more water and eating as healthily as possible (hard when you have sweet cravings!!) Stay away from anything dodgy like prawns, pre-made deli salads and pate's and soft cheeses (Brie, blue vein and the like is a no no, cheddar, tasty etc is fine)
Make sure though that you don't overdo it on the food as you might make the mistake I did the first time around and put on 25kg because I felt it was justified; I was creating an entire human being from scratch you know!!! (well thats what I told hubby and the doctor!!)
2nd time around only put on 15kg! Much easier to lose!!
Good luck and congrats!!

I read somewhere that a pregnany woman actually only needs to be consuming 200-300 more calories a day than a non-pregnant woman.
