I have a good job right now, but I'm thinking of studying Culinary Arts to become a chef. The problem is I'm allergic to seafood! Do I have a chance of becoming a chef then?

It depends on the severity of your allergy

Some people are so seriously allergic that even the smell or pr essence of the food in the air can cause an anaphalactic reaction. In that case you would need to prepare seafood using gloves and maybe a mask.

There are many people with food allergies who cook and serve food they are allergic to for others. You just need to be careful.Check with your doctor!

Or you can simply be a chef avoiding seafood preparation!Such a a vegetaraian or vegan chef,or healthfood chef, you can even do spa cusiine.Just be upfront in saying you have an allergy and cannot handle seafood.

imagine how many vegitairian or vgan chefs there are out there! of course you still can becoem a chef - but how severe are your reactions? and is it only if you actually eat the seafood? coz if it is then just dont taste your food when using it!! but if you go in to anaphalactic shock or whatever then just tell your teachers or bosses etc and then dont cook it. if you were severly allergic to soemthing like wheat or dairy or whatever then i would be a little less optimistic, but as seafood is used quite rarely in common cooking then you will be ok. just dont get a job at a fish and chip shop or anywhere that specialises in seafood cooking. lol

I'm assuming if you have an allergy to seafood, that means you cannot eat it. I've never heard of anyone not being able to serve it if they were allergic. If you are worried about it, work somewhere that doesn't serve seafood on the menu. Places like that do exist.

Yes!! Off-course you do have that chance to become a good chef you know!!! You can specialise on other sections like poultry and pork's, others specialises in veggies and pastries and desserts. But then other chef whom i knew who had seafood allergies can also cook but they are not the one who are tasting their finish products but their assistant cooks so having their allergies is being solved. It might work also to you!!!

Could you work in a vegan or vegetarian restaurant? How serious is your seafood allergy? Do you have problems smelling or touching seafood or is it tasting the food thats the problem?

Sure, but if you get reactions when you touch it that might become a problem if you want to work in a restaurant that does seafood. If you don't then you shouldn't have a problem.

Within limits, I think you could. There is plenty that can be done without touching seafood.

Good luck!
