Not necessarily. A kidney ultrasound is usually done to detect kidney stones,to determine the size of the kidneys, detect kidney masses, detect fluid surrounding the kidneys, determine the cause of blocked urine flow and investigate causes for recurring urinary tract infections. An ultrasound may also detect any inflammation of the kidney.

Kidney infections however would be detected better through urine or blood tests and some obvious symptoms.

Ultrasound cannot detect urinary tract infection (UTI), which is the most common type of infection. But ultrasound CAN detect focal kidney infection like pyelonephritis or renal abscess. (These are less common.)

CT (with contrast) is much better than ultrasound for both pyelonephritis and abscess, but CT is still *not* useful for UTI.

CT is much better than ultrasound in evaluating kidney stones-- it is now almost routine in ERs to get CTs on patients with symptoms of kidney stone pain (renal colic). An ultrasound may still be done in children or pregnant women, where we are very concerned about the radiation from CT.

To diagnose UTI you need, as lani s says, urine tests and symptoms.

I couldn't just sit around and do nothing like my doctors suggested.

They didn't want me to do anything or to take herbs or herbal remedies, but I had to try something - they just wanted me to do dialysis!

This program allowed me to take control of my health. I went from Stage 4 to Stage 3 kidney disease.

It was easy to do and my BUN, creatinine and anemia are all in better ranges.

U/S could probably pick up an emphyasematous pyelonephritis if there is enough gas production from the bacteria. But it may be hard to decide whether the air interference is from the bowerl or not.
