The middle part is really confusing me. I'm pretty sure it's metaphorical. Maybe I should attend this lecture (-:.

So, maybe we could say "Armchair Theoretical Society?"

An "armchair explorer" is someone who reads a lot of travel books and does all her exploring from the comfort of an armchair.

Or am I on the wrong track here?
