As mentioned already, the website is www.ellisisland.org. Using that site may require you to hunt and peck. With so many people coming through Ellis Island in such a short time, there was a lot of names that were spelled wrong. In order for it to pull up, your going to have to spell it right. There is a tool though that may help you. Go here :

http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/EIDB/ellis.html

Fill in the form. This will search through that data base in one step and pull up multiple possibilities. You don't have to fill in EVERY area of the form.

Also, there is a possibility that your family didn't come through Ellis island, yet came through the port of New York. You might also want to search this site:

http://www.castlegarden.org/index.html

You can also use Stephen Morses search engine to search those records:

http://www.stevemorse.org/ellis/cg.html?firstkind=starts&FNM=&lastkind=starts&LNM=

I hope this helps.

I just looked up my mother's maiden name of Coston on www.ellisislandimmigrants.org/ellis_island_immigrants.htm, and there were TONS of listings, dating back to the 1790's or before. You might try that. Also just type in a search area on Yahoo or Google "Ellis Island genealogy" and you will find a lot of listings.

I second HSK's Mama re Castle Garden. From their site:

CastleGarden.org offers free access to an extraordinary database of information on 10 million immigrants from

>>> 1830 through 1892, the year Ellis Island opened. <<<
(Emphasis added)

So, if your ancestors cameover before 1892, they won't be on Ellis Island.org at all.

If you know the names of your immigrant ancestors and want help researching them, the cumulative research skills and resource bases on this board are pretty formidable. We'd be more than happy to help you look up people's passenger lists, immigration records and census records.

Post what you know about names, dob, date of death, place of death, spouse/children, whatever you know about them. Many of us have paid subscriptions and are more than happy to help with lookups.
