If he's not behind me, he's ahead of me! When I get aggravated and mention this, he's states that other people are "in his way", came between us, or has some other excuse. I'm just getting plain tired of it.

I think you are correct to be concerned. Read your boyfriend's body language and he tells you one thing, but behaves in a different way. Is your gut telling you that he doesn't want to be seen together with you in public? It sounds like a lame excuse that he gave you that people "are in his way". If he is giving you unreasonable excuses, then is he avoiding telling you the truth.
It certainly sounds like he doesn't see himself as a couple with you anymore and he is thinking of moving away from the relationship.
Have a heart to heart talk with him about where your relationship is going, and most of all, ask yourself first is this what you want in a relationship that means so much to you. Even after a few years, people do grow apart and become interested in taking new directions.
Talk about this with a good friend.

He sounds kinda like a grump and if you want someone to walk beside you you might consider a new boyfriend! I don't mean sound nasty but if you guys are fighting over this thing, the really big issues will be deal breakers!
I understand where you are coming from, my husband is usually in front of me! Especially if we are shopping! He hates shopping! Could that be it? I know my sweetie loves me but I also know he's a foot taller and walks faster. Perhaps it's not really so important? If he loves you and things are good other than this, I'd let it go and give him a kiss! Good luck!

Unfortunately since he walks both in front of you and behind you, it could be that he is trying not to be seen as being "with" you. I wouldnt quite say that he is embarrassed about being with you, its kind of hard to explain. It all comes down to whether or not he wants himself to be seen as yours. As 1/2 of a couple. Ask yourself if he makes excuses to go to places without you. Or perhaps asks you to just go instead. Its not that he is actively cheating on you... I dont know how to explain it really.
I have done this before.. when I didnt want to be with someone but had so much history that I didnt know how to end it... and sometimes wasnt sure if I even wanted to.
Look for other clues... other pieces of the puzzle to see what is really going on. If there is nothing then perhaps there is no explanation. But if there are more things, and since you have already mentioned it to him.. perhaps he is seeking independence and this is his way of achieving a little.

Either he does not really want people to think he is with you or he likes looking at your butt. More than likely it is the former. Guys obtain a great deal of their self esteem by extension. So if they are seen with a hot girl, people assume he is something more than meets the eye. It takes the pressure off of him to be "hot." Sad but true. I would show him exactly what you think of his behavior and walk AWAY from him. He should be proud to be with you and walking beside you, not behind you.

It could just be he's telling the truth and annoyed with walking through or around people.
I had an ex and we didn't walk the same speed, used to annoy the hell outta me when we'd be out (I had to walk slower or let her get some distance). We'd start out side by side but always ended up one in front of the other.

he could be just walking faster than u
but it said that a man would walk by her girls side because of territory, u see
maybe he feels comfortable and doesnt feel any kind of threat coz he knows u r his girl.
i think u should start walking ahead of him, see how he reacts. or behind him like u walk way behind, see how he reacts it might get the message across,
but i don know sorry

I can't tell you what it means but I doubt that it means he is naturally submissive because you also mentioned he'll walk ahead of you.

its either that he likes looking at your butt or is ashamed of being with u... why not try walking fast like leaving him behind, besides hes always 3-4 feet behind you...

a hug to you, and I feel for you.
to me what you say about his reaction to your feelings says it all-he doesnt care about your feelings and he doesnt care to hear them and blames others including you for his actions.
because of that I would say he doesnt care to be seen next to you and possibly is busy looking for other possiblities in your presence when you cant have his attention.

if he's behind you he wants to look at the way you swing your ***.if he's ahead of you he don't feel like talking to you or people to know you are together
