As a child I lived on a ranch in the western US. When school let out for the summer my shoes would come off and I would remain barefoot until fall. At first my feet would be fairly tender but by August or so I could walk on any surface without discomfort. I remember once I had stepped on a thumb tack and walked around all day with it stuck in my heel until my sister asked me what "that silver thing on my foot was." I hadn't even noticed!

NO. I can't stand on even one little stone - let alone a whole gravel path. You should hear me barefoot on a shingle beach. OUCH

When I was younger I could do this, but only because the soles of my feet were toughened by not wearing shoes in the summer.
Now my soles are soft & doing this isn't pleasant. You have to condition this area to be able to do it.

i hate to be the party pooper but if you have diabetes or any nerve damage in your lower extremities i don't recommend doing this. diabetics with nerve damage can't feel their feet eventually and frequently get their foot/leg amputated because they get an infection after a simple cut in the painless foot that can't be treated effectively with antibiotics...so snip snip goes the leg. very sad part of uncontrolled diabetes.
but i'm guessing your feet are just conditioned with calluses.

As I found out today, gravel hurts my bare feet.

Maybe if you have super calloused feet. Otherwise, not really. Gravel can be very sharp.

everyone has different levels of pain thresholds. nobody can tell you that they dont feel any pain, its just that tthey feel it, but they are bearable...its either this or they have already gotten used to walk on this type of surface.
