A large, plain carbon steel bowie knife. Nothing to malfunction, no temptation to take on things that are too big and dangerous for you, quiet, and easy to sharpen. With a good knife you have the tool to make any number of other handy survival aids.

On a deserted island a knife might serve you better but since your are talking about large, wild animals and roving marauders I'd pick a good FAL or M-14 because it is suitably large enough caliber (7.62x51 NATO) for big game, accurate and holds enough ammo for defensive purposes.

I would choose the trusty 30-06 Springfield. It can take anything in North America, so it can take anything on a deserted island. If some weird mountain man was living there and tried to attack me for some reason, I could easily throw some WWII military ammo into it.

A sharp survival knife. You can use it to defend yourself against two-legged predators(at close range it is faster than a gun), does not need to be reloaded, and you can use it to make spears, dig pits, and sharpen punji stakes to make your camp defensible against the wild animals.
My second choice would be a satellite phone. Not a lot of use in a fight, but might help you get the heck off the island!
If you were looking for firearm answers, the AK-47 with the double drum magazine. Decent stopping power, and a reputation for being indestructable. (beleive the drum setup holds around 100 rounds)

A Mossberg 590 and bayonet, with birdshot, 6's, buckshot, and slugs.
Plus with the bayonet I have a spear, I can harvest anything from birds to squirrels on up to animals I should think twice about!
And with the mechanical advantage the "unloaded shotgun" can give me, I have a machete, a shelter building tool...and so on.
Ever tried to kill a rabbit with just a spear? A snare? A deadfall? It's the whole reason we made guns...

Rifle would be unpractical, because once you are out of ammo, rifle is just a club. I would chose a permenant weapon like bow, crossbow or a long spear and a knife ofcourse. I could retrive the old arrows and use them again, or make new ones.

A light, short barreled bolt action rifle in .308, A Steyr Scout would be perfect!
I'd also have a Cold Steel Bushman knife. Get one!
I got one of these years ago and have been constantly impressed at how much you can do with a $20 knife. It is IMHO the best survival knife you can own.
I have used mine for general camping and hunting duties, as a small machete, cutting firewood, cutting downed electric lines to clear a roadway, digging my Jeep out of a rut, etc. You can even shove a stick or broom handle up it and make it a formidable spear. Thius is one tough piece of steel, in a shape that can be used for just about anything.

I would use an 1860 henry lever action with .45 LC, that shoud prove effective against anything your likely to encounter on an island, and the lever action enables a fast rate of fire if needed without the temptation to waste all your ammo at once, as with a semiauto rifle!
Plus a more powerful rifle would not be necessary, the .45 LC in a rifle should be more than adaquate for the hogs you might encounter!

A "Bahama Sling" because a "deserted island will eventually run out of critters and you will have to get food from the water around you.
LOL I would prefer one with a Navy Pilot Combat Knife attached to it....
Those "Brittany" spears could prove very useful as well.....
