What are morals other than the thoughts of our parents, friends and loved ones that have placed behind us? In order for you to be completely free and have your own morals you will need to completely free your mind and think of things unbiased and from your own perspective. The question you must ask yourself is are your morals really yours? Or is this a cunundrum in and of itself?

Rules are one thing but beliefs are another. For instance in some cultures many wives are acceptable but in ours we shun it. Why? Do YOU truly believe it is wrong or is it what you are TAUGHT.

I agree with you. For most of us anyway, morality is just behavior modification carried out since infancy. It doesn't have anything to do with having a good character.

When we do something good and praiseworthy, we get a good feeling that originates from years of praise. Our motives are to get a feel-good reward.

Feelings are a very weak foundation for a moral stance. But there are some people who derive moral standards from their understanding of God and their foundations are going to be stronger.

Morals are the rules for how we treat each other.

What part of this concept suggests it's something besides a consensus?

You can't play football until everyone agrees on the rules.

How does the quarterback know the rules are truly his?

Who cares? He plays by the rules or he get penalized.

In essence, I agree with Institution. Everyone who has any contact with the world is influenced by others, no matter what or who they are. Even if you totally disagree with someone and their beliefs, you are influenced by them because you are setting yourself up to be opposite them.

To be totally objective is hard and never 100%. BUT, the best we can do is try no matter how many times we fail. It's part of our 'evolution'.

They can never be independent from society, so obviously they are both a result of and constrained by this. On the other hand, we can own them by questioning them and reading provoking thoughts be ethicists such as Peter Singer and changing our minds from time to time, after consideration

Everything is somehow related.

Even the "free thinking" types get inspiration from other people's beliefs.
