My elementary school education (I dropped out after that to sail the Seven Seas) and the name of this section on Y!A (appearing everywhere) tells me that it is "tattoos."

Why is it that 1/3 of the people post questions here write "tattoo's"? I have to conclude that either:
1) they haven't yet finished elementary school---which means they are too yound to be casting inter-nets; or,
2) they grew up in Southern California.

Help me here.

This is a rhetorical question - not sure if that counts as a violation so I'll give you the benefit of the doubt and not report you ;-)

No, the real cause is 3) They don't read good literature or even newspapers, they do all their reading on the internet, meaning that they pick up bad spelling from other ignoramuses. It's a vicious circle, I'm afraid.

And what's that crack about Southern California? Me no understand, me from Australia. Pliz explain!

A lot of people mess up where to place apostrophes. The plural of Tattoo is in fact Tattoos, no apostrophe.

If you're saying you want to get many tattoos you'd say "I want to get 5 tattoos today"

However if you're saying something about someones tattoo you could say "Wow his tattoo's ugly" This just shows possession.

examples:

if you're saying something like, "i have a lot of tattoos" then obviously it's 'tattoos'... no apostrophe

if you're saying something like, "her tattoo's amazing" then the apostrophe is taking the place of the 'i' in 'is' because essentially what you're saying is "her tattoo is amazing"

and if you're saying something like "i like that tattoo's colors" then you also use the apostrophe because it's showing possession... it's the tattoo's colors... make sense?

people do the same thing with other words such as "their, there, they're. your, you're. and too, two, to." its hard to remember ALL correct spelling and grammar.

hopefully this helps. sometimes i purposely leave out apostrophes because i don't feel like putting them in, however i don't just add one that isn't supposed to be there. its possible that a lot of people on yahoo answers just have bad grammar and don't spell very well!!

It's tattoos.

"Tattoo's" would mean belong to someone. Which would make sense if you were to say, "His tattoo's are very nicely done."

But in the context that others are using "tattoos", they are wrong for writing "tattoo's" and just have bad grammar.

Tattoos is the OK one but spell check also gives Tattoo's
so even Yahoo Q&A gets it wrong.
