Well the U2 is one of the most secret planes in the USAF.
I would imagine its returning or transiting to the gulf but it could be going or retuning anywhere on exercise. They are all based at Beale AFB and Fairford would be the obvious choice for a stopover in the UK. Fairford is the USAF's base in Europe for all the heavy and secret aircraft they use. Yes mildenhall and Rammstein could take it but the first choice would be Fairford.
Fairford is even equipped to handle the Space Shuttle in an emergency and can be an alternate runway.
In short no-one knows what that U2 is doing except the pilot, the base commander at Fairford and senior generals in the USAF.

Probably been over the arctic spying on the Ruskies seeing what they are getting up to.

They're certainly still active, at least as the TR2; probably on a training mission, in or out of its way somewhere.
NASA also flies the ER 2, a tweaked version, for earth-mapping or something equally abstruse, might well have been that on some survey or whatever they do.
Usually if you see one of these they're either about to land or have just taken off.
We get all sorts of strange things in and out of our local RAF Station, which they always blandly deny despite the aircraft being at about 1000ft over our roof.

If it was seen going in for landing, then surely it has come back after a spying mission over an unknown territory.

Oh I see, when you have a god looking over your house, you don't notice, but when its a spyplane, you have to write about it. That's very hurtful, I threw a 2 pence down to get your attention and everything.

It wasn't a U-2. It may have been a TR-1A. Nothing unusual about that. The operate there from time to time.

Perhaps they're on a training exercise. If they were spying they'd make sure they couldn't be seen.
