do i need the latest ps3 update (1.90) to play certain games?

i need some one to explain to me how important the udates are and how can i update my ps3. can i use a disc or do i have to update it from my ps3? i will also like to know to play certain games do i need an update? someone please help

The updates are important because they have been adding features like upscaling and backgrounds. Also helps with backward compat. The easiest way to update is system update with the PS3 connected to the internet. If that isn't possible then you can use a blank cd/dvd or USB drive and download the update through a computer. If you use a disc or USB make sure it is in the right folder though. I forget what it is but on the sony site they list the way it needs to be.

To play certain ps2 games you do need updates but ps3 games should work fine without them but is recommended if you update your system. They are very important. You can update your system software by any of the following methods:

System Update
Update using the PS3 system's System Update feature.

Update using a PC
Download update data using a PC and save on storage media or a USB Mass Storage device. Copy the update data to the PS3 system's hard disk and perform the update.
An appropriate USB adaptor is required to use storage media with some models.

Update using disc media
Update using update data that is included on a game disc.

As the first guy says, but i'll add if you buy a PS3 game that needs an update to run, it will be on the disc and take you through it once you put the disc in.
