I don't like Starbucks. There is a chain called the Coffee Beanery. I have seen a little store with a drive up in different cities called Cup of Joe. In our little "city" we have 2 or 3 shops called Courthouse Coffee, their first store was on courthouse square. There is another one called Blue Lion and the 2-3 in our area hangs up art work from the local grade schools. There are several restaurants that have coffee counters. Truck stops either have great coffee or terrible coffee, I haven't found one that was in the middle yet.

Where I live, we have three starbucks - they are building more though. I prefer the smaller local owned shops, cheaper, better coffee, friendly people and excellant service. We actually have about 50 coffee shops here and I rarely if ever go to starbucks unless I have gift certificate from someone. Not my favorite.....Seatles Best - the former parent company of Starbucks is my favorite chain. Unfortunately, on the east coast in US, there are not any here. I always stop when flying to get my fix....

Yes, there's such a thing as a coffee house anymore if it doesn't have a starbucks sign outside of it. Coffee Bean.

There are usually small gourmet coffee houses located in more towns. I always search them out and prefer them over Starbucks anytime. Do some research in your local area. Gourmet shops usually have great tasting espresso, a unique ambiance, and nice people working there. I personally like to support and small business operator.

if you live on the east coast, Caribou. West, Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf. and of course theres the mom and pop coffee shops you can find in any town (they usually make good coffee). Theres the new cool looking coffee shops that usually stay small because starbucks are everywhere, and other kinds of coffee shops but its hard to list them all.

Just met friends at a Java Retreat last month. There are several in my town. But as you pointed out there are Starbucks "everywhere" and in every airport too and other kinds of coffee houses are becoming really scarce.
