Think of the Pharisees of Jesus time and how the got so caught up in things trivial and unimportant to God. Much the same has happened today and folks forget that our ways are not God's ways. He has given us simple commands which we seem to twist and alter to our own purposes.
Does that help?

Ever see the movie 'Dogma?' Chris Rock summed it up pretty well. Belief is a hard thing to change. People get very protective of their beliefs.

I think it has something to do with Comfort. People get comfortable in their beliefs. Christians tend to get reinforcement from others who share in that comfort and tend to be rather protective over that comfort when threatened. The same is true about practitioners of other religions. But the Main Stream Media hasn't allowed the comfort of those beliefs to spread yet.

People want their ideology about spirituality and about why they are here to be a complete answer. When other people bring in alternative 'answers' then the ideology feels under attack and unclosed.

a.Human construction of society (religion included) and its workings include human attempts to shape an ideology that is so complete it is beyond question or rupture.
b.However, a society (including religion) that is ideologically complete is impossible. “All human constructions constitute attempts to institute an impossible object (a finished society including religion) and master an excessive element (the real) which always escapes our means of representation” ( Stavrakakis 2000: 100).
c.Because a ‘completed’ ideology is impossible, then to understand society is not the same as understanding “what society is.” Rather, understanding society (including religion) is to appreciate what prevents society (including religion) from being what its ideology promises it will be.
d.“What prevents it from being what it promises to be is the force of dislocation.”
e.Dislocation is defined as the elements of rupture and crisis that threaten and subvert ideological beliefs and assumptions. The theory of dislocation can be compared with frameworks of “order and disjuncture” as descriptive terms. Order can be understood as the ‘ideal worlds’ that people imagine could exist if groups followed the ‘right’ social rules and had the ‘right’ beliefs. Disjuncture comes from the gap between ideal worlds and social reality, between intention and outcome (Lewis & Mosse 2006: 2).
f.The force of dislocation motivates humans to make new ideological attempts to reach the impossible goal of a ‘complete’ society that succeeds in being what ideologies promise it will be.

And all of this trying to keep one's perfect ideology (which includes spirituality) intact takes work and energy. People want their ideological work to be done, so they fight hard for what they want to be true. It's just easier to say 'they' are wrong, then to have a conversation with people whose ideas may cause a 'leak' in our ideology. Listening instead of dehumanizing people-who-don't-agree means having to work to fill ideological ruptures by rethinking.

I'm a Christian and I notice that when a Christian gives a Biblical answer it is shot down quickly with thumbs down, and a lot of words like 'just dumb people believe in God'. I guess we don't see it the same way. I feel others are very rude to Christians.

I think that the anti-Christians are just as rude. You are right, though. There's nothing worse than a holier-than-thou Christian. Unless it's a know-it-all atheist. Christians, just believe. Atheists, let us.

Unfortunately many people misunderstand their role. They think it is their job to point out other's biblical shortcommings. They are like the Pharissees of the New Testament. Jesus rebuked the religious folks. Love people... even when you think they are wrong. Even when they make choices you don't agree with. That is Christlike.

AHHH, we are all human, my friend. when someone criticizes my thinking or makes fun of me because I believe in
God, it ruffles my feathers and I want to lash out and say something (usually stupid)

You're right, as christians we have been given the great commission - to spread the gospel throughout the world, but that doesn't mean prosletizing, or acting judgemental or better than someone else - it simply means to let everyone hear the good news. that's it. What happens next is up to them - you can't win anyone to Christ by telling them they are living in sin, or going to hell, that's not what Christ asked us to do. He said to spread the good news. He also said to be sure and not throw our pearls before swine. To me, that means if a person is anti-christian or really doesn't want to hear it, or starts to argue about it, they aren't ready for it, so all the beautiful love of the gospel you offer is trampled upon - better to keep the good news to yourself and find a willing listener than to waste your time on someone who has never been touched in the heart by His creator.

It's the religion- its influence on the psyche is so strong that it creates zealots sometimes, who think they're one with 'God' and can therefore speak for him as well as judge.

Jhn 3:17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved.

Agreed. But, truth matters.

Hell is real and I hope to warn people of the wrath to come. Maybe some will be convicted to do what God says: seek me and find me when you seek me with your whole heart (sincerely).

If I appear rude, it is not intentional. My words are intended to warn and contend, but not offend or spurn. However, the Gospel is only an offense to those who are perishing.
