Why do people swear on the Bible? Isn't that the stupidest thing you've ever heard...I mean I know someone who swore on the Bible they were not cheating on their wife (which they were) but anyway, does the Bible not say that swearing is a sin...don't swear to God...yet people do it all the time and act like it's proving something...HELLO.....

Why are people confused about what I mean by "swearing" ... I mean like "I swear to God" obviously...since I'm talking about swearing with your hand on the bible...why would I be talking about cussing? Context clues people!!!!

People feel the need to swear on the Bible because the bible is correct. What you read is true. I know people who refer to the bible all the time. That's just the way people are. They don't have to be proving something to swear on the Bible.

People swear on the bible as a way to say "I'm telling the truth" if they don't believe or fear God enough to be able to boldly lie while doing that, it's probably far worse than you had imagined.

Now...it depends on what "swear" means...does it mean swear words(cuss/curse words)? Or "I swear to God that if you're lying I'll kill you"?

you are correct it does say in the bible don;t swear on God in heaven and using the bible is the same thing. as many people do not even believe in God it is a bit pointless. so many have no respect for any thing.

I agree. That is why in some courtrooms that ask you if you 'affirm', with your hand raised. That is just side stepping the meaning of what God meant, but it serves the purpose. Some people do not believe in God, so saying I swear to God is like eating candy to them.

The reason why people swear on the Bible is because it represents truth. whether or not that person tells the truth makes it bad

well its mans way of seeing if the other person wont lie but pple have lost all fear of God so there they lie in court but i beleive you cant outsmart God if u swear on the bible and tell a lie no harm done to others its to the detriment of the one telling the lie

Mat 5:33 ¶ Again, ye have heard that it hath been said by them of old time, Thou shalt not forswear thyself, but shalt perform unto the Lord thine oaths:

Mat 5:34 But I say unto you, Swear not at all; neither by heaven; for it is God's throne:

Mat 5:35 Nor by the earth; for it is his footstool: neither by Jerusalem; for it is the city of the great King.

Mat 5:36 Neither shalt thou swear by thy head, because thou canst not make one hair white or black.

Mat 5:37 But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay: for whatsoever is more than these cometh of evil.

Uhh.. I think you need to update your definition on swearing.

Swear as an oath is different from swear as an offensive term.
