MY smokes where am at just now are about 65p the pack o 20, how the F*^k can the UK justify adding so much onto a packet o fags, most places i work are cheap as hell even around Europe it's cheaper than the UK, how the hell would the UK economy survive if smoking was banned altogether, the gov. would get f*^k all what then charge tap water at £3 a pint that'll be next.

Taxes were originally levied in order to raise money for specific projects, usually wars.

This was then expanded so that they were used to pay for expenses of general benefit to the community, such as a legal system and eventually a police force, etc.

Later it was realised that taxes could be used for social engineering and to encourage the change in the behaviour of individuals.

Smoking is currently deemed unacceptable behaviour so is taxed highly.

It is an interesting discussion as to the effects on the economy of the tax yield on tobacco products dropping to zero. The tax collected would fall but other expenditures would also fall, even if not immediately. The most obvious example is the cost of the NHS.

On the other hand, life expectancy would increase meaning more pensions would be payable but the working life could also be extended as the non smokers would have less time off work.

Just impossible to predict the final outcome but as this situation would evolve over a number of years then we would adapt the tax system along the way.

In the UK, we enjoy free healthcare, this has to be paid for.

Smoking and drinking related problems account for a significant amount of workload on the NHS.

the current government seem to care little for public consensus, they pretend to listen to our ideas, problems and tax gripes and then do what they intended anyway,it seems to me they feel untouchable and have an "what you gonna do about it" attitude. man it really blows.p.s. have you paid your personal waste tax yet? they can't keep pumping it in the sea for free, it all cost you know!
