A good question. After all, if God is infinitely powerful, then he should have an infinite array of choices and options available to him other than sentencing someone to suffer forever.
People who think otherwise evidently do not believe their god is as powerful as they say he is.

The reason hell exists isn't because God is sadistic, it's because he doesn't see why he should have to put up with people who don't like him. Don't forget that people are made in his image, so when people choose to not like him or to mistreat other humans, then God takes it very personally. Why should he he put up with these people in heaven, why can't he put them somewhere else? He has prepared a place for these people and he judges each person to make sure only those who deserve to go there do so.

It's a scare tactic to convert the weak-minded.
However, if I were to try and be serious about the subject matter, I would say that there must be a balance between good and evil. One cannot exist without the other.

Aw man, he's only funin' with ya. ---He just wants to give you a vacation in a warm place, before you join him, all tan and healthy.----It shouldn't hurt you to shovel a bit of coal while you're there, just to help pay for your travelin' expense.

uhhh because you get more followers through fear that you do with virtue? I think people find they have much more to gain from worshipping an invisible man in the sky when they find out they'll goto hell otherwise.

Hell doesn't exist. God is our Father/Mother. We wouldn't send our kids to such a place and neither would He.
