It bugs me as if there are not enough tax's we have to pay, but we get taxed on our vehicles every year.....i've never had to do this anywhere else, only in this small town....do you have to pay taxes on the cars you own in your city or state?...where does this money we pay them even go to?.... we have a mini van and a older model car and we just got our taxes on them and have to pay $156.....i just think this is crazy.

And i don't mean a registration tax when you gets new license plates, they call this vehicle tax a property tax...they consider your cars part of your property.

When I lived in Virginia, I had to pay personal property tax on my car, boat and motorcycle. It was based upon the original value, then lessened as the vehicle aged and depreciated. That tax was on top of registration and wheel tax (by the wheel on the ground) for all, including the boat trailer. I now live in Tennessee, where the registration fees are less, and the wheel tax is one fee per license plate, but it varies by county. The boat has a yearly decal that gets renewed, but no other taxes or fees.

Here in Ontario each vehicle is taxed each time it's sold according to book value. You can get a dealers appraisal so you pay less but it's a hassle. The government makes a killing on resales and puts it into general revenue.

There are several states that charge a tax every year when you renew your plates based on the value of the car. I'm in PA now and we don't have that - we did when I lived in Arizona.
